Schroeder won re-election in 2011. He and fellow incumbent Charlotte Vandervalk ran unopposed in the Republican Primary on June 7, but Vandervalk ultimately decided not to pursue re-elections. Vandervalk was replaced on the Republican ticket by Holly Schepisi. Michael Wilson and Sara Adele Higgins were also seeking the Republican nomination, however, both Wilson and Higgins were removed from the ballot when their candidacies were found invalid by the Secretary of State's office in late April.[2]

Schroeder and Schepisi defeated Anthony Iannarelli, Jr. (D), Michael McCarthy (D) and Clinton Bosca (I) in the November 8 general election.[3]

Noteworthy events

Loan scandal

In December 2012, Schroeder, whose businesses were allegedly in decline following the end of the war in Iraq, was indicted on writing bad checks totaling more than $3.4 million and stealing over $1.8 million from loaners to use on debt and expenses rather than a housing venture he claimed to be pursuing.[7][8]

In March 2013, Schroeder pleaded not guilty to the charges. The state offered Schroeder a plea deal stipulating a five-year prison sentence, restitution of about $5 million, resignation from the General Assembly and a lifetime ban from public office.[9][10]

Schroeder's criminal trial was initially scheduled for February 2, 2015.[11] It was later postponed until the fall.[12]

In October 2016, Schroeder pleaded guilty to second-degree misconduct by a corporate official and pleaded guilty to issuing bad checks.[13] On February 6, 2017, Schroeder was sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to repay over $5.3 million to his victims.[14]
