Robert L. Vining, Jr. was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Vining is a judge serving on senior status. His service ended on September 1, 2022, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

Vining graduated from the University of Georgia with his bachelor's degree in 1959 and later graduated from University of Georgia School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1959. Vining also served as a U.S. Air Force Sergeant from 1951 to 1959.[1]

Professional career

Vining became a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Georgia from 1958 to 1969. He was solicitor general for the Conasauga Judicial Circuit from 1963 to 1968 before serving on the Conasauga Judicial Circuit from 1969 to 1979.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Georgia

Vining was nominated by Jimmy Carter on June 14, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Vining was confirmed by the Senate on July 23, 1979, and received commission on July 24, 1979. Vining served as the chief judge for the Northern District of Georgia from 1995 to 1996 before later assuming senior status on March 31, 1996. His service ended on September 1, 2022, upon his death.[1] Vining was succeeded in this position by Judge Thomas Thrash.
