Four seats on the Robeson County Schools school board were up for general election on May 6, 2014.

Incumbent Brenda S. Fairley-Ferebee defeated Effie N. McEachin for re-election to her District 2 seat. Peggy Wilkins Chavis defeated incumbent Severeo Kerns and Brenda L. Locklear for the District 3 seat. Incumbents Mike Smith and Dwayne Smith won unopposed in their respective districts.

Robeson County Schools is located in Robeson County, North Carolina. Robeson County had a population of 134,841 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[1] Robeson County Schools was the 13th-largest school district in North Carolina, serving 23,933 students during the 2010-2011 school year.[2]

Demographics

Robeson County underperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 12.9% of Robeson County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8% for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Robeson County was $30,167 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Robeson County was 31.9% compared to 16.8% for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Robeson County school board consisted of eleven members elected to four-year terms. Eight members were elected by geographic districts, and three members were elected at large. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 6, 2014. Four seats were on the ballot in 2014.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on February 10, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was February 28, 2014.[5]
