Federal wire fraud charge (2022)

Smith was charged with one count of honest services wire fraud on March 4, 2022. Smith, Rep. Glen Casada (R), and Cade Cothren are alleged to have set up a political consulting firm, Phoenix Solutions, with the intent of funneling kickbacks to Smith and Casada.[1] She resigned from the state House on March 7, 2022, and pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal the following day. Smith stated, "Earlier today, I entered into a plea agreement with the federal government. I have pled guilty to one count of honest services fraud. Once the Department of Justice informed me of the nature of my activities, I took full responsibility for my actions, culminating in my guilty plea. There are no excuses. I intend to cooperate fully as a witness with the federal government and do whatever I can to assist the government in this regard."[2]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Tennessee

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
