Campaign themes

2016

Rivas' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Jobs and the Economy: North Carolina House Democrats seek to grow the state’s economy through common sense policies that benefit of all who live and work here. We must support the businesses that choose to do business in North Carolina and the people and consumers who live here. Our focus is on building an economy that works for everyone and focuses on supporting North Carolina’s families and small businesses.

Upward Mobility: Making sure that every resident of our district has an equal opportunity to make a living wage, obtain access to affordable care, and find gainful employment is critical to being a responsible state house representative. I would pursue specific policies around small business tax credits, Medicaid expansion, and affordable housing to make these values a reality.

Toll Roads and the Cintra Contract: I stand firmly against Rep. Brawley's privatized toll roads initiative. Contracting without a cap for toll fees, penalizing middle class workers for commuting to their jobs, and putting my constituents last are not my values. If elected, I will actively work towards ending this and similar programs.

An Education System that Works for Everyone!: Our teachers deserve to be paid better than 8th worst in the nation. A strong public education system is essential to improve our economy for hardworking North Carolinian families. If elected, I will sponsor legislation to raise teacher pay and bring back teacher assistants so students will benefit from a higher level of attention from the staff.

The Environment: North Carolina House Democrats support protecting our air and drinking water for future generations. We believe that responsible environmental policies and economic growth can go hand and hand and lead to a more prosperous economic landscape for future generations while protecting the quality of life North Carolina has become known for – from the mountains to the coast. We believe that when corporations pollute in North Carolina, the cost of clean-up should be the responsibility of the company responsible rather than being passed on to the hardworking taxpayers of North Carolina.[1]
