Four seats on the Rochester Public Schools Board of Education were up for primary election on August 12, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014.

Incumbent Terry Throndson ran against Jean Marvin to retain his Position 5 seat. Fellow board member Anne Becker faced newcomer Don Barlow for the Position 6 seat. Position 2 and Position 4 incumbents Gary W. Smith and Julie Workman ran unopposed for re-election.[1] Smith, Workman, Marvin, and Becker won election in their respective districts.

Rochester Public Schools is located in Olmsted County, Minnesota. The county seat is Rochester. Olmsted County had a population of 149,226 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Rochester Public Schools was the seventh-largest school district in Minnesota and served 16,317 students.[3]

Demographics

In 2012, Olmsted County had a higher percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 40.4 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Olmsted County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 32.2 percent for Minnesota. The county’s median household income was $66,667, above the state median of $59,126. The poverty rate in Olmsted County was 8.5 percent, below the state rate of 11.2 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Rochester Board of Education consisted of seven members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic districts. The primary election was held on August 12, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period. The filing period began May 20, 2014, and ended June 3, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 14, 2014.[5][6]

Endorsements

Position 4 incumbent Julie Workman received an endorsement from the Rochester Education Association.[7]

Position 5 candidate Jean Marvin and former candidate Nora Dooley received endorsements from the Rochester Education Association.[7] Dooley also received endorsements from former United States Vice President Walter Mondale, Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede, Olmsted County Commissioner, and former Rochester school board members Dr. Paul Scanlon and Kay Batchelder.[8]

Position 5 incumbent Terry Throndson and Position 6 incumbent Anne Becker both received endorsements from the Post Bulletin.[9][10]

Position 6 candidate Don Barlow received an endorsement from the Rochester Education Association.[7]

Campaign finance

Rochester Public Schools does not publish campaign finance reports for school board candidates. State law does not require campaign finance reporting if contributions or expenditures do not exceed $750 in a calendar year.[11]
