Five seats on the Rockingham County Schools school board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbents Hal Griffin, Lorie Booth McKinney, Ron Price and Steve C. Smith faced challengers Miriam Pinnix Aikens, Don Anderson, Bill Best, Louis Dew, Tony Doom, Emily Rudisill Hayduk, Virginia M. Hoover, David King, Allison Huffman Ormond, Eric H. Smith, John Smith, Lynn T. Tuttle, Ken White and Ophelia Wright.

Ron Price, Lorie Booth McKinney, Lynn T. Tuttle, Virginia M. Hoover and Ophelia Wright won election to the at-large seats.

Rockingham County Schools is located in Rockingham County, North Carolina. The county seat of Rockingham County is Wentworth. Rockingham County is home to 91,878 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Rockingham County Schools was the 27th-largest school district in North Carolina and served 13,893 students.[2]

Demographics

Rockingham County underperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 13.0 percent of Rockingham County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8 percent for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Rockingham County was $38,004 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Rockingham County was 17.0 percent compared to 16.8 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Rockingham school board consists of eleven members elected to four-year terms. Six members are elected by geographic electoral districts and five members are elected at-large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Five seats were on the ballot in 2014.[4]
