Roger Lau is the former campaign manager for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren's (D-Mass.) 2020 presidential campaign. Lau was the political director for Warren's 2012 Senate campaign, state director in her Senate office from 2013 until 2018, and campaign manager for her 2018 Senate campaign. He also worked on campaigns for Richard Neal (D-Mass.), Mike Capuano (D-Mass.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), and Niki Tsongas (D-Mass.).

Career

Lau began his political career in 1998 as an intern in Sen. Kerry's office in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he later worked as press secretary until 2006. He was also a staffer on Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign.[1][2] In 2006, Lau joined U.S. Rep. Marty Meehan's (D-Mass.) office as district director. He then managed Tsongas' 2007 special election campaign to fill the seat after Meehan's resignation.[2]

Lau was a state director for Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. He managed Kerry's 2008 Senate campaign and became deputy state director in Kerry's office in 2009, a role he held at various times until 2012. Also in 2009, he served as chief of protocol for the U.S. Department of Commerce and managed Capuano's U.S. Senate primary campaign. In 2010, Lau managed Neal's congressional re-election campaign. He served as Neal's district director in 2012.[2]

In 2012, Lau joined Warren's U.S. Senate campaign as political director. After she was elected, he served as state director for her office. In 2018, he managed her re-election campaign.[2]

Lau graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a B.A. in political science in 2000.[2]

Campaign strategy

In a March 27, 2019, Medium post titled "How we’ll win," Lau stated the following:

We’re building a strong grassroots campaign grounded in organizing and person-to-person contact. ... We’re running the most tightly-integrated organizing, data, and technology operation at this stage of a primary, ever, and we have been since day one. In the early states, we already have more than 80 staffers on the ground building the field operation it will take to win. Elizabeth herself has already taken a dozen trips to the four early states, holding more than 30 public events. And she’s visited more of the Super Tuesday states than anyone else in the race. Her decision to forgo high-dollar events means she’s had the time to thank grassroots donors at pop-up events across the country and personally on the phone.[3][4]
