Rohit Chopra was the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from 2021 to 2025. He was confirmed by the Senate on September 30, 2021, by a vote of 50-48.[1] He previously served as a commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission.[2]

Biography

Chopra received a B.A. from Harvard University and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked at McKinsey & Company from 2008 to 2010 in the financial services, healthcare, and consumer technology sectors.[3][4]

From 2010 to 2015, he worked at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as an assistant director and student loan ombudsman. He was also a special adviser to the secretary of education at the U.S. Department of Education in 2016 on loan servicing issues.[3][4]

In 2018, he became a commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission.[4]

The Biden Transition announced on January 18, 2021, that Chopra would be nominated for director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CNN called his selection "a victory for the Democratic Party's progressive wing, which has led the charge for more aggressive oversight of the financial industry. Chopra was in on the ground floor with Warren, who built the CFPB as part of the Dodd-Frank law passed in response to the 2008 financial crisis."[5]

He was confirmed by the Senate on September 30, 2021, by a vote of 50-48. Vice President Kamala Harris (D) cast a tie-breaking vote to invoke cloture on his nomination.[1]
