An effort to recall Ron Godsey and Dennis Shurtz from their positions as chair and trustee, respectively, of the Cowley College Board of Trustees in Cowley County, Kansas was launched in May 2014. The two board members were accused of open meeting violations.[1] Supporters of the recall failed to collect enough valid signatures. Therefore, the effort did not go to a vote.[2]

Background

The trustees and former school president, Clark Williams, were criticized for a number of recent decisions, including the elimination of the men’s and women’s soccer teams. Williams ultimately resigned, and the trustees reversed some of the decisions. Disgruntled residents also questioned whether the board had obeyed open meeting laws when making decisions regarding the college.[1]

In order to trigger a recall election, supporters of the recall were required to gather at least 1,105 valid signatures for Shurtz and at least 938 for Godsey within a 90-day span. The signature requirements differed because the two board members were elected in different election years.[1]
