My 32 years in public education as a counselor, principal and superintendent has shown me the importance of quality school board governance and its impact on the effectiveness of district schools. I'm is running for school board to use my experience and expertise in public education to improve outcomes for all students.
  • Budget Oversight and Accountability. We need to achieve better educational returns on the $900 million spent per year on the 19,000 students in Pittsburgh Public schools. PPS is in the state's top 5% districts in spending per pupil, but in the bottom one-third in student achievement. This shows that the district's budget doesn't match our students needs. We have enough money, it's how we spend it.
  • Improved Student Outcomes. We need to provide supports so that all third graders achieve proficiency in reading and math. Currently, 62%of all PPS Black third graders do not achieve proficiency in reading. Beyond third grade, catching up becomes incredibly harder for students.
  • Data-Driven, Transparent Decisions. We need to make decisions that are data driven and transparent. By creating a system to measure student and school effectiveness, in collaboration with teachers and principles, information can be regularly reviewed by the Board and Superintendent. This will lay the foundation for monitoring success at each school and making adjustments that will lead to all students becoming life and career ready upon high school graduation.
Educational policy at the local, state, and national levels are my primary passions as it pertains to

creating and sustaining safe, caring, and quality public schools for all students, especially those that
have been marginalized by the traditional public education model adopted by the US back in 1865 taken
from Prussia, Germany.

Specific policy areas include: public school governance & organization, teaching and assessment for
learning, school leadership, school culture, essential community supports, public school choice, and

public-school funding.
