Campaign themes

2015

Haskins' website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

Education

  • Local Standards and Controls: While Federal & State standards are helpful for Nationwide tracking, the specific needs of the children of our community require local standards and oversight. Teaching to specific standardized tests prevents true education and is as irresponsible as blaming teachers for the failure of public education.
  • Local Involvement: Lost in the drive to improve education are the essential elements that worked in the past. Parental, neighborly, and community involvement have always been vital to developing educated, well rounded, productive citizens. Many problems children face are handled by pharmacology rather than involvement by positive influential adults.
  • Expand Community Based Mentoring: Our community contains many everyday heroes, those who have the heart and experience to provide encouragement and support to children. Qualified community mentoring programs can fill in the gaps left by uninvolved adults in childrens lives.

Business growth and development

  • Limited Regulation: Although it is often necessary to restrict activity that harms the community, it is vitally important to use our resources to support and develop local businesses. Unnecessary regulations limit rather than encourage business growth.
  • Startup funding and Support: Developing our community requires assisting small owners with the tools necessary to grow, create jobs, expand the local economy. Creating partnerships with investors, large businesses and Metro Government with provide the funding and support needed to succeed.
  • Job creation: Small businesses employ a large percentage of the nation's workforce. More thriving small businesses mean more jobs!
  • Zoning assistance: Many business ideas are not viable due to zoning issues that depend on assistance from City Council.
