I'm a 30 year NM resident arriving in NM as an Air Force Officer at the Kirtland AFB Air Force Research Labs. I stayed in NM upon completing my assignment and joined a small business, SVS Inc, focused on high technology defense applications. After SVS was acquired by Boeing, I grew my career and am now the Site Lead and Sr Program Manager for the Laser & Electro-Optical Systems unit. I have a BS in Electrical Engineering from NDSU and a MS in Electro-Optics from AF Institute of Technology. I have 5 children who all attended school at East Mountain High School and all have attended CNM. I also have 4 grandchildren (and hopefully more in the future!) and want to ensure CNM will be there for them in the future. Education has always been important to myself and my wife, and the CNM Governing Board is an opportunity for me to give my time back to the community to ensure we have a strong institution for helping create the workforce for the jobs of today, as well as enabling our community to compete for the jobs of the future. My background in technology development and entrepreneurship has provided me with the experience of growing and guiding organizations into new areas and staying current with advanced technology. My role as Site Lead for Boeing is focused on long term strategy, staffing and business growth - all of which will allow me to provide new perspectives to the CNM Governing Board. I would be honored to be the District 7 CNM Governing Board member.
  • New voice and perspective for CNM. Starting my career in a small business required me to have an entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to step into new areas. I will bring this sprit to the Governing Board to provide a new voice to help develop the future for CNM. As the lead for Boeing's local office, I've been focused on strategy and growth. I will bring this perspective to CNM by addressing both near term challenges as well as guiding the approach to ensure CNM has a bright future.
  • Preparing for the jobs of today. I believe CNM plays an important role in our community by preparing members of our community for the workforce needed to grow businesses here in NM. From our young students looking for their first step into a career field, to others looking to change careers to find the job they have always wanted, CNM can be the launching pad. I want to ensure CNMs programs are there to prepare them, help them grow, and provide our community with the workforce needed to help grow businesses.
  • Creating the path to the jobs of the future. My business focus (and personal passion since the first Star Wars movie!) is developing laser weapon systems for defense applications. It's often said "lasers are the weapons of the future... and always will be" - but we are actually creating them today - and here in NM! It is this focus on the technologies of the future that I will bring to the CNM Governing Board. We see the beginnings of this with new advances with Quantum Computing the State of NM is investing in because of our local technology expertise. I want to help CNM prepare the path for new career paths and ensure members of our community are ready to take advantage of new emerging opportunities.
I'm a strong supporter of policies to help create, grow and sustain businesses. CNM provides a pathway for a wide range of opportunities. With the largest undergraduate enrollment in NM, CNM is often the first step to a growing career path. I want to ensure CNM continues to be a leading institution for helping businesses find the talented workforce they need to succeed and grow.
Integrity and honesty is my first key core principle. I was drawn to the Air Force and commissioned as an officer as this was a key tenant I found exemplified. I will bring this core principle to the CNM Governing Board and focus on ensuring the goals of the institution are the primary focus. Fiscal responsibility is next on my list for public officials. Ensuring our communities precious tax resources are utilized effectively and efficiently will be a focus for me. For CNM, as well as all public education institutions, there will always be a challenge to ensure the necessary resources are available to ensure success, while understanding difficult choices sometimes have to be made. I hope to provide my perspective to the CNM administration on dealing with the budgetary challenges that will undoubtedly be ahead. Public service over personal ambition is reflected in the fact the CNM Governing Board is a volunteer position with no compensation. For me, this is an opportunity to give back to the community and provide my experience to help guide CNM into the future. Additional characteristics include vision and foresight - I want to help plan for the future, anticipate challenges and pursue new opportunities. My background in strategy and growth as a business leader will bring a new perspective to CNM Governing Board.
As stated on the CNM Website, "The Board adopts and declares Policy Statements addressing the mission, vision, values and goals of the College. The policies provide a general operating climate for College employees, students and other citizens and guide decisions related to the attainment of desired educational objectives." For me, ensuring the mission is focused on having the right programs for the jobs of today links to the vision of creating the workforce for the jobs of the future. Having new and diverse voices and perspectives on the CNM Governing Board will improve the quality of decisions and creating a stronger institution. When I left the Air Force and joined a local small company, their motto of "Have Fun, Make a Difference, and oh by the way... make a profit" was a reflection of the values and goals of the organization. I hope to bring this same philosophy to help guide CNM into a new future with the policies focused on creating an atmosphere of success for both students, faculty and administrators.
I grew up on a farm in southern Minnesota, so my first job was really just being part of a family farm. My dad raised hogs, as well as growing corn and soybeans. My first jobs ranged from cleaning out the pig pens, moving baby pigs from the nursery building to the finishing building, walking beans to hoe out weeds, and mowing the lawn. As I grew older, I began to appreciate the amazing diversity of knowledge my dad had - repairing and maintaining complex farm equipment, understanding chemicals used on crops, the financial details of buying and selling products. It was the best "first job" and lifestyle to grow up in. It was this experience that prepared me for adapting to challenges and finding a way to succeed in new environments. It taught me the importance of work and diversity of roles needed to sustain and grow a business. I think CNM reflects this same diversity of roles and the importance of hard work. My five children all took advantage of CNM to help them get a head start on their college education, as well as to support changing career paths and learning new skills after college. I think my background going from a small farm to a high technology industry provides a unique perspective to bring to the CNM Governing Board.
