Ronald Forsthoefel is a judge for the Ashland County Court of Common Pleas in Ashland County, Ohio. He was elected to the court in November 2010 and assumed his position on February 9, 2011. Forsthoefel won re-election to a second term in the general election on November 8, 2016. His term will expire on February 8, 2023.[1][2][3]
Biography
Forsthoefel received both his B.A. and his J.D. from Ohio Northern University. Before joining the court, Forsthoefel served as a magistrate for both the Ashland County Court of Common Pleas and the Ashland County Municipal Court. He has also practiced law as a municipal prosecutor, as an assistant county prosecuting attorney and as a private practitioner.[2][4]

Selection method

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[5]
The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[5]
Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[5]
- a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
- at least six years practiced in law; and
- under the age of 70.
Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.
2010
Forsthoefel defeated incumbent Deborah E. Woodward in the Republican primary election. He was elected after running unopposed in the general election.[6]
