Ronald Earl Longstaff is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Longstaff is a judge serving on senior status.[1]

Education

Longstaff graduated from Kansas State University with his bachelor's degree in 1962 and later graduated from the University of Iowa with his J.D. degree in 1965.[1]

Professional career

Longstaff began his legal career as a law clerk for federal Judge Roy Stephenson in the Southern District of Iowa from 1965 to 1967. In 1967, Longstaff entered into private practice in Iowa from 1967 to 1968. Also, in addition to being a federal magistrate judge, Longstaff was a part-time clerk for the Southern District of Iowa from 1968 to 1976. He also served as a adjunct professor for Drake Law School from 1973 to 1976.[1]

Judicial career

Southern District of Iowa

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, Longstaff was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on July 24, 1991, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. Longstaff was confirmed by the Senate on October 31, 1991, and received commission on November 5, 1991.[2] Longstaff served as the chief judge of the Southern District of Iowa from 2001 to 2006 before assuming senior status on November 5, 2006.[1]

Magistrate

Longstaff began his federal judicial career as a federal magistrate judge for the Southern District of Iowa. He was appointed to the court in 1968 and served until joining the court in 1991.[1]
