Ronald Mariano (Democratic Party) is a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 3rd Norfolk District. He assumed office in 1992. His current term ends on January 6, 2027.
Mariano was first elected to the chamber in 1991. On December 30, 2020, Mariano was sworn in as speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.[1]
Mariano was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1946.[2] He received a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University and a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston.[3] Mariano was a teacher at Quincy Public Schools for 12 years.[3] He served on the Quincy School Committee from 1989 to 1995.[4]
As a representative, Mariano focused on health care, criminal justice, gun control, and education. As House Chair of the Joint Committee on Financial Services, Mariano helped draft a state healthcare reform law in 2006 that served as a model for the Affordable Care Act.[5][3] Former President Barack Obama (D) said, "we built the Affordable Care Act on this template of proven, bipartisan success. [The Massachusetts law] was the model for the nation’s law."[6] Mariano was also a proponent of a 2008 law allowing competition in the automobile insurance market, which was formerly managed by the state, and said he led efforts to pass Massachusetts’ 2014 gun safety legislation.[3]
In 2024, Mariano said his "top priorities include ensuring that every Massachusetts resident has access to quality, affordable health care, bolstering clean energy production in the Commonwealth, and combating the epidemic of gun violence by supporting common sense gun regulations."[7] According to his official biography, Mariano "led many of the House’s conference committee negotiations for bills that established school accountability standards, contained health care cost growth, reformed the criminal justice system, created an adult-use marijuana industry, and regulated ride-sharing services" during his tenure as speaker of the House.[3]
Biography
Mariano was a teacher. He previously served on the Quincy School Committee from 1989 to 1995.[4]

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
