Ronald Newsome (Libertarian Party) ran for election to the Nevada State Assembly to represent District 17. Newsome lost in the general election on November 6, 2018.

Campaign themes

2016

Newsome's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Rebuilding Our Economy

  • 'No' new and unnecessary taxes. The incumbent voted for the largest tax hike in Nevada’s history (NV-SB483, 2015), costing taxpayers $1.1 Billion dollars in added fees and taxes.
  • Business owners (current and prospecting) have to jump through hoops to even keep their business afloat, with excessive added fees and special permits and harsh restrictions. We want to encourage business in the district, not shut them down. For all business no matter the size!
  • On top of excessive taxation, our state spends irresponsibly. We need to step back and make better use of our current funding and budgeting.
  • Lower the cost of living. Our utility bills have gone up 6 times in the last several months alone, with no increase in quality or even employment/employment benefits.

Keeping our Communities Safe

  • Establish minimum criminal sentencing laws to ensure criminals get the full, rightful punishment and victims get the just peace of mind.
  • Break down the school to prison pipeline. We need to make it easier for our students to graduate than for our students to devote their life to crime.
  • Create better community/neighbor outreach programs to ensure no crime is going unpunished and no person is getting silently victimized.

Standing with Solar Rights for the Homeowner

  • Dismantle NVEnergy (formerly Nevada Power) and their corporate outreach that has created a monopoly over electricity in the state. The incumbent has taken money from NVEnergy; I refuse to accept a dime from them. He is now in bed with the solar companies to give them discounts and NOT the homeowners.
  • Establish policies and introduce legislation that would give the homeowner all the legal rights to the electricity they produce, eliminating the corrupted middle man that is the electricity company.
  • Along with economic policies, give economic freedom to the solar companies to make better business and give them, as well as the homeowners, the confidence they need to invest in rooftop solar.
  • Bring legislation to give power back to the people over the PUC and not the government. 'Make this an elected board' That answers to the people.

Standing with Honor for our Veterans

  • I stand with the Veterans of all degrees in their fight for the 'Promise Kept'
  • I stand for the fight for more choices in medical care in both a timely matter and safe place for all veterans and their medical needs, as well as their family’s
  • Help with State funds to aid in services and the transition from military life to civilian again. With supportive services to help catch the 'falling' soldier before he/she falls to the list of many lives lost.
  • I support the Veterans Treatment Court and the services it supplies. And will fight to make sure all courts in the State abide by the law for Veterans and the treatment court.[1]
