Rondell Magic Jordan is a dedicated public servant and civil rights attorney in Washington DC. Magic was born to working class parents in a public housing development within one of New York City’s most impoverished neighborhoods. His parents worked for a local community self-improvement center, helping folks to secure employment, housing, childcare, and educational opportunities. They then started a small family-owned business together and employed dozens of people from his community. Like far too many Black small business owners, Magic's parents' business struggled and ultimately went under during the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007.

Magic is a public servant; not a politician. He began his legal career with Legal Aid DC, where he defended low-income tenants from eviction during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic. He then worked as a Racial Justice Fellow with Justice at Work, where he represented migrant farm workers in wage theft, immigration, and employment discrimination matters. Prior to entering this race, Magic provided client-centered, post-commitment defense to delinquency-system involved children and youth.

Magic is running as an Independent because he believes that a healthy democracy is one in which voters are free to elect candidates based on their policies and principles, not simply their party affiliation. He also believes that neither of the two major political parties have a monopoly on fair and just policymaking.
  • Magic believes we must ensure the housing needs of ALL people in Ward 2 are met.

This starts by addressing housing insecurity and skyrocketing housing costs for the forgotten middle, for young people, and for the elderly, while providing adequate shelter space for the unhoused individuals in our community. We also must ensure contracts with housing developers guarantee mixed-income housing that provides for all kinds of residents.

Finally, new housing must meet environmental standards that contribute to a lower carbon footprint to the city as a means of combatting climate change.
  • Everyone knows the cost of living (really, the cost of survival) is too damn high in Ward 2 for middle-income, working class and impoverished folks. Magic believes that DC has a unique opportunity to end childhood poverty - as we saw during the pandemic, child poverty was more or less halved. But now, Baby bonds have taken a backseat. Our objective should be to leverage the unique opportunity presented by the recent reduction in child poverty rates and the impact of the pandemic to develop a comprehensive, sustainable strategy for ending childhood poverty in Washington, D.C. This initiative will reinvigorate and expand the baby bonds program, alongside other key measures, to ensure long-term economic stability for children and families.
  • Gun violence destroys individual lives, families, and communities. Magic knows this is a Public Health crisis, and has several ideas on how to address it. Integration of Gun Violence Education in Schools: Work with educational experts and public safety professionals to develop a comprehensive gun violence prevention curriculum; and provide training for teachers and school staff on how to effectively deliver interactive programs on gun violence education and how to handle sensitive topics related to violence, alongside mentorship programs, after-school programs, and mental health services before and after these life-changing events occur.
Magic is most passionate about eradicating housing insecurity and homelessness, ending childhood poverty, and addressing gun violence as the public health crisis that it is.

Magic is running for City Council in Ward 2 because of his unwavering commitment to public service and to protecting the rights of the most marginalized communities. Electing him as Ward 2 Councilmember would ensure that DC becomes a city of opportunity for all folks - from the unhoused to the White House.
I believe this office holds a unique and essential role in our government and legal system because it serves as both a legislative body and a voice for the people in a jurisdiction that lacks the full rights of statehood. Unlike councils in other cities, the DC City Council functions almost as a hybrid of state and municipal government, making its responsibilities even more crucial.

One of the most distinctive qualities of the Council is its role in passing legislation that has the same weight as state laws. The Council has the power to legislate on a wide range of issues that impact every aspect of daily life in DC—whether it's education, housing, transportation, or public safety. This gives the Council a level of influence comparable to a state legislature, making its actions vital to the well-being of over 700,000 residents.

However, what makes the Council truly unique is its role as the legislative body for a city that operates under limited home rule. While DC has local autonomy in many areas, Congress retains oversight and final authority over certain matters, including our budget and criminal justice system. This means the DC Council must be both innovative and strategic in advancing policies that serve the best interests of our residents, often within the confines of federal oversight. Advocating for greater autonomy and pushing back against undue federal interference is a core part of the Council's mission.

The Council is also critical in terms of representation. Given that DC residents do not have full voting representation in Congress, the Council plays a crucial role in amplifying the voices of our citizens on the local, national, and even international stages. Whether it's advocating for statehood or standing up for residents' rights, the DC City Council serves as the most direct and impactful way for people to have their needs and concerns heard by those in power.
I look up to leaders who have demonstrated unwavering commitment to social justice, equity, and the power of community-driven change. One figure who has greatly influenced my values and approach to leadership is the late Congressman John Lewis. His lifelong dedication to civil rights, courage in the face of adversity, and insistence on "good trouble" continue to inspire me.

John Lewis showed us that the fight for justice and equality requires both persistence and moral clarity. He stood up for what was right, even when it was unpopular or dangerous, and he never wavered in his belief that people working together could create meaningful change. His emphasis on nonviolent protest and his role in the Civil Rights Movement demonstrated the power of grassroots activism—a principle I deeply believe in and would carry with me as a member of the DC City Council.

Locally, I also admire former DC Councilmember Marion Barry. While his legacy is complex, Barry's passion for lifting up underserved communities and empowering residents through job programs and economic development was transformative for many in the District. He was someone who deeply understood the struggles of everyday Washingtonians and made it his mission to improve their lives. His ability to connect with people at the grassroots level and advocate for those who often felt left behind is something I strive to emulate.

At the heart of my admiration for these figures is their focus on service to others—leading not for personal gain, but for the betterment of their communities. I want to follow their example by fighting for social and economic justice, expanding opportunities for those who have been historically marginalized, and always standing up for what is right, even when it’s difficult.

I strive to embody their courage, dedication, and connection to the community. These qualities, combined with my own passion for equity and progress, will guide my work to improve the lives of all DC residents.
There are two books that I would recommend to someone who wants to understand my political philosophy: (1) Utopia for Realists - Rutger Bregman and (2) Poverty, by America - Matthew Desmond.
An elected official should embody several key characteristics and principles to effectively serve their community:

Integrity: Honesty and transparency are fundamental. Elected officials must act ethically, avoiding corruption and conflicts of interest while maintaining accountability to their constituents.

Empathy: Understanding and caring about the diverse needs and experiences of the people they represent is crucial. This enables them to make decisions that are in the public's best interest, not just for a select few.

Commitment to Public Service: A genuine desire to improve the lives of others should motivate them. They should prioritize public well-being over personal or political gain.

Accountability: An official must take responsibility for their decisions and actions. They should be open to scrutiny and willing to explain their choices, accepting praise and criticism alike.

Vision: Effective leaders need a clear, long-term vision for the community’s growth and improvement. They should be able to inspire others with their plans for the future.

Pragmatism: While idealism can inspire, practical solutions and the ability to work within existing systems and constraints are essential for real progress.

Resilience: Political life is filled with challenges, and an elected official must remain determined, even in the face of setbacks or opposition.

Collaboration: The ability to work across party lines, listen to diverse perspectives, and build coalitions is crucial for enacting meaningful policy.

Courage: Officials must have the bravery to make difficult decisions, even when they are unpopular, if they are in the best interest of the public.

These principles help ensure that elected officials act as trustworthy stewards of the public interest, balancing diverse needs while leading with integrity.
First and foremost, I have a strong commitment to community engagement. I believe that listening to residents is vital to understanding their needs and priorities. My history of working closely with various community organizations has equipped me with the ability to connect with diverse constituents and ensure that their voices are heard in the decision-making process. I will prioritize open communication and actively seek input on important issues affecting our neighborhoods.

Secondly, I possess a deep understanding of local governance and policy-making. I have experience in analyzing complex legislation and collaborating with stakeholders to develop effective solutions. My background in public policy equips me with the skills to navigate the intricacies of government, ensuring that I can advocate for meaningful legislation that benefits all residents of Ward 2.

Another important quality is my problem-solving mindset. I approach challenges with a solutions-oriented attitude, always looking for innovative ways to address issues such as affordable housing, public safety, and transportation. I believe in leveraging data and community feedback to drive decisions, ensuring that our policies are not only effective but also rooted in the realities of everyday life for our residents.

Furthermore, I bring a strong sense of integrity and accountability to this role. I believe in leading by example and maintaining transparency in all actions. As a Councilmember, I will hold myself accountable to my constituents, ensuring that I operate with the highest ethical standards and that my decisions reflect the values and needs of our community.

Finally, I am passionate about equity and inclusivity. I understand the importance of addressing the disparities that exist in our city and will work diligently to ensure that all residents have access to resources and opportunities, regardless of their background.
The core responsibilities of a member of the DC City Council include:

Legislation: Councilmembers are responsible for drafting, debating, and passing laws that govern the District of Columbia. This includes laws related to education, public safety, housing, health, and more.

Budget Oversight: One of the most important roles is overseeing the District’s budget. Councilmembers help draft, approve, and monitor the annual budget, ensuring that public funds are allocated responsibly to meet the city’s needs.

Constituent Services: Councilmembers represent their wards or the entire District (in the case of at-large members) and must address the needs of residents. This includes resolving issues related to public services, housing, and other government functions.

Policy Development: Beyond passing laws, the council plays a critical role in shaping the District’s policies on key issues like affordable housing, education reform, economic development, and transportation.

Government Oversight: The council holds the executive branch of DC’s government, including the Mayor’s office, accountable. This involves oversight hearings, investigations, and ensuring that city agencies are performing effectively and transparently.

Public Safety: The council helps set policies that govern the police force, emergency services, and overall public safety strategies. This involves balancing community safety with justice reform efforts.

Zoning and Land Use: The council plays a significant role in land use decisions, including approving development projects and making zoning changes that affect how land is used across the city.

Collaboration with Federal Government: Since DC is not a state, councilmembers must work closely with federal authorities, particularly on matters where the city’s autonomy is limited (like taxation or criminal justice).

These responsibilities are vital to ensuring that the city runs effectively and that residents' needs are addressed.
I aspire to leave a legacy rooted in equity, community empowerment, and sustainable growth. My vision is to create a Ward where every resident feels valued, heard, and has access to the resources they need to thrive.

I want to be known for fostering inclusivity and diversity within our community. I believe that Ward 2 is strongest when it embraces its rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. I aim to implement policies that promote equitable access to housing, education, and economic opportunities for all residents, ensuring that no one is left behind as our neighborhoods continue to grow and evolve.

Additionally, I want to leave a legacy of transparency and accountability in local government. Trust between residents and their elected officials is crucial for effective governance. By promoting open communication, engaging with constituents regularly, and being accountable for my decisions, I hope to inspire a culture of civic engagement and encourage more residents to participate in the democratic process.

Sustainability is another cornerstone of my legacy. I envision a Ward that prioritizes environmental stewardship through green initiatives, improved public transportation, and the creation of accessible public spaces. I want to advocate for policies that not only address the pressing challenges of climate change but also enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Finally, I want to leave a legacy of community resilience and empowerment. I believe in the power of grassroots movements and local organizations to drive change. By supporting and collaborating with these entities, I aim to create a supportive environment where residents feel empowered to advocate for their needs and shape the future of their neighborhoods.

In summary, my legacy would be one of inclusivity, transparency, sustainability, and empowerment. I hope to create a lasting impact that reflects the values of our community and sets a foundation for future generations to build upon.
One of the first historical event of my lifetime that I remember is 9/11. As an 11 year-old New Yorker, that day will forever be seared into my memory.
My very first job was working on a street team with a local councilmember in my hometown of Brooklyn, New York. I had the job for a couple of weeks over the summer and it was the highlight of my 12-year old summer.
one of my favorite books is "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. This novel has profoundly influenced my perspective on life and my approach to public service.

At its core, "The Alchemist" is about following one’s dreams and listening to one's heart, no matter the obstacles encountered along the way. The story’s protagonist, Santiago, embarks on a journey of self-discovery and adventure, learning that the pursuit of personal legends and purpose is a vital aspect of life. This theme resonates with me deeply, as I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams and realize their potential.

What I find particularly compelling is the idea that the journey is just as important as the destination. Santiago faces numerous challenges, but each experience teaches him valuable lessons about perseverance, courage, and the interconnectedness of all things. This mirrors my own journey growing up in public housing, where I learned that every struggle has the potential to lead to growth and self-awareness.

"The Alchemist" also emphasizes the importance of community and support. Just as Santiago encounters various mentors and allies along his journey, I am committed to fostering a sense of community in Ward 2, where residents support one another in pursuing their dreams. I want to create a Ward where everyone feels empowered to chase their aspirations, just as I did.

In summary, "The Alchemist" inspires me to be a champion for the dreams of all residents in Ward 2. It reminds me that with determination, resilience, and a supportive community, we can all turn our personal legends into reality. As a Councilmember, I will strive to create opportunities for every resident to embark on their own journey toward success and fulfillment.
If I could be any fictional character, I would choose to be Harry Potter.

Harry's journey from an ordinary boy to a brave hero resonates deeply with me. He embodies the themes of resilience, courage, and the power of friendship—qualities that I believe are essential not only in personal growth but also in effective leadership. Growing up facing significant challenges, Harry teaches us that with determination and support from others, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

Moreover, Harry’s strong sense of justice and his willingness to stand up against wrongdoing inspire me to advocate for what is right in our community. He often finds himself fighting against injustice, whether it’s standing up to bullies or challenging oppressive systems. As a Councilmember, I aim to channel that same commitment to equity and justice by fighting for policies that uplift all residents in Ward 2, particularly those who have been marginalized or underserved.

Harry's friendships with Hermione and Ron also remind me of the importance of collaboration and teamwork. In my work on the City Council, I would prioritize building relationships with fellow Councilmembers, community organizations, and residents to create a unified front for positive change.
I want to share a personal struggle that has profoundly shaped my character and commitment to public service: growing up in public housing and enduring poverty.

I was raised in a public housing community, where the challenges of financial instability were an everyday reality. My family faced obstacles that often seemed insurmountable—limited access to resources, educational inequities, and the constant pressure of making ends meet. There were days when we had to decide between basic necessities, and the weight of those choices instilled in me a deep understanding of the hardships many families face in our city.

Despite these challenges, I have always been determined to rise above my circumstances. I became a trailblazer in my family, pursuing education as a pathway to a better life. I worked multiple jobs to support myself through school, seeking opportunities to learn and grow. This journey taught me resilience, the importance of hard work, and the value of community support.

These experiences have fueled my passion for advocating for equitable policies that uplift those in similar situations. I understand firsthand the impact of poverty and the systemic barriers that keep people from achieving their full potential. I want to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education, affordable housing, and the resources necessary to succeed.

My background has not only shaped my values but has also motivated me to fight for a more equitable and inclusive Ward 2. I believe that my story is a testament to the strength of community and the importance of creating opportunities for all residents. As a Councilmember, I will draw on my experiences to advocate for policies that empower our most vulnerable populations, ensuring that they, too, can overcome struggles and thrive in our city.
There are several lesser-known but important powers and responsibilities of this office that more residents should be aware of, as they directly affect how we shape policy and hold the government accountable.

One power that often goes unnoticed is the Council's authority over zoning and land use. The DC Council plays a key role in determining how land is developed, including decisions on affordable housing, commercial development, and green spaces. These decisions impact the character of neighborhoods, property values, and the availability of housing. By shaping zoning laws, the Council can drive equitable development and ensure that DC grows in a way that benefits all residents, not just a few.

Another responsibility that deserves more attention is the Council’s oversight of contracts and procurement processes. The Council reviews and approves large contracts between the District government and private entities, ensuring that taxpayer money is spent wisely and fairly. This oversight helps prevent waste and corruption, ensuring that government services, from construction projects to public health initiatives, are delivered efficiently and ethically.

Additionally, many people may not realize that the DC Council has a significant role in shaping criminal justice policy, especially since we lack full control over our judicial system due to federal oversight. While Congress has a say in some aspects, the Council still influences key areas such as policing, sentencing reform, and how we invest in community-based alternatives to incarceration. These decisions have a direct impact on public safety and social justice in our city.

Lastly, the Council holds an important role in emergency management and crisis response. Whether it’s dealing with public health crises, natural disasters, or major events, the Council helps set policies for how the city prepares for and responds to emergencies.
I believe that while previous experience in government or politics can be beneficial, it is not a requirement for effective leadership. What matters most is a deep commitment to public service, a clear understanding of the issues facing our community, and a willingness to engage with residents to find solutions.

Experience in government or politics can provide useful insight into how the system works, how laws are passed, and how budgets are managed. It can help a Councilmember navigate the often complex processes involved in getting things done. Having prior experience may also mean that a candidate has built important relationships with stakeholders, city agencies, and community organizations, which can be helpful for achieving policy goals.

That said, government experience alone does not guarantee effective leadership. Fresh perspectives and new ideas are equally important, and sometimes those come from people outside of traditional political circles. Many of the most effective leaders are those who have been deeply involved in their communities—whether through activism, volunteering, or working in sectors like education, healthcare, or business—because they bring a firsthand understanding of the challenges people face.

In fact, an outsider’s perspective can sometimes be an advantage. Without being entrenched in the status quo, individuals without prior political experience can offer innovative solutions and challenge ineffective practices. What’s critical is a willingness to learn, collaborate, and listen to the voices of the people.

Ultimately, whether a candidate has prior government experience or not, what makes them effective is their dedication to serving the community, their ability to work with others to find practical solutions, and their passion for improving the quality of life for all residents. Experience is valuable, but so are creativity, empathy, and a deep sense of accountability.
First and foremost, policy-making expertise is critical. Understanding how to craft, debate, and implement legislation is fundamental to the Council’s role. This includes knowledge of how policies impact various communities and the ability to analyze data to drive informed decisions. Councilmembers must be able to navigate legal and regulatory frameworks to ensure that policies are both effective and enforceable.

Second, problem-solving and negotiation skills are indispensable. The Council frequently addresses complex, multifaceted issues, and Councilmembers must be able to think critically, identify innovative solutions, and bring people together to build consensus. Whether working across political lines, mediating between different interest groups, or addressing community concerns, strong negotiation skills are key to achieving progress.

Third, communication skills are vital. Councilmembers need to listen to their constituents, articulate their positions clearly, and engage with the public regularly. Strong communication is essential for building trust, keeping residents informed, and ensuring that diverse voices are represented in policy discussions.

Lastly, community engagement and empathy are paramount. Councilmembers must be connected to the needs and concerns of their constituents. This requires not only engaging with residents but also possessing the empathy to understand the impact of policy decisions on people’s lives. Being in touch with the community allows Councilmembers to advocate effectively for solutions that address real-world problems.

In short, policy expertise, problem-solving, communication, and empathy are all critical skills for success on the DC City Council. Together, they ensure that Councilmembers can lead effectively and work to improve the quality of life for all DC residents.
First, unlike other city councils, the DC City Council functions as both a city and state legislature. It has the power to create laws on a wide range of issues that directly impact the daily lives of DC residents, from housing and public safety to transportation and education. This dual role gives the Council more influence and responsibility than typical municipal bodies, as its decisions have far-reaching implications across the city.

Second, the Council oversees the District’s budget, which exceeds $19 billion. This means the Council plays a critical role in allocating resources to key services like schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. It is responsible for ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used effectively and in ways that reflect the needs of our diverse community. In many ways, this budgetary power mirrors the authority held by state legislatures.

Another unique aspect of the DC City Council is its role in advocating for residents in the face of federal oversight. Because Washington, DC, lacks full statehood and has limited autonomy, the Council must often fight for greater local control over our own affairs. This includes pushing back on federal interference in our budget and criminal justice system. The Council is the body that ensures DC’s residents have a voice in local governance, even as Congress retains some authority over the District.

Finally, the Council plays a critical role in government oversight. It has the power to investigate and hold accountable city agencies and officials, ensuring transparency and ethical governance. This watchdog function is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring that the local government is serving residents effectively.
One of my favorite jokes is:

Why did the scarecrow win an award?
Because he was outstanding in his field!

This joke always makes me smile because it’s a great reminder that excellence often comes from those who are deeply rooted in their communities and dedicated to their work. Just like the scarecrow, I believe that being "outstanding" means being present, engaged, and committed to making a difference in the lives of others.

In my campaign, I aim to embody that spirit by being actively involved in Ward 2, listening to residents' concerns, and working tirelessly to address the issues that matter most to our community. Whether it’s fighting for affordable housing, improving public services, or promoting local businesses, I want to ensure that I am “in the field,” so to speak, advocating for our residents every step of the way.

So, while we tackle serious challenges ahead, I also believe it’s essential to share a laugh and keep our spirits high. After all, if we can find joy in the little things, we can better navigate the complexities of our city together.
I believe financial transparency and government accountability are fundamental to building trust between the government and the people it serves. Without transparency, it is impossible for residents to know whether their tax dollars are being used effectively or if their elected officials are acting in their best interest.

First and foremost, I am committed to ensuring that the District’s budget process is fully open to the public. This means providing clear, accessible information about how funds are allocated, how they are spent, and what outcomes we expect to achieve. Budget decisions should reflect the priorities of the community, and residents deserve to be fully informed and engaged in the process.

In terms of accountability, I believe every agency and official must be held to the highest ethical standards. This includes regular, thorough oversight of city agencies to ensure they are delivering services efficiently and effectively. If an agency is not performing, or if there are allegations of corruption, the Council must act swiftly to investigate, demand corrective actions, and, if necessary, hold individuals accountable for their actions.

Additionally, I support stronger whistleblower protections to encourage government employees to come forward if they witness wrongdoing without fear of retaliation. Transparency should also extend to contracts and procurement processes, ensuring fair competition and reducing the potential for corruption or favoritism.

Finally, I would advocate for more robust public reporting systems that allow residents to easily track how their government is performing in key areas, from education to housing to public safety. A government that is open and accountable is one that can be trusted to serve its people well, and as a Councilmember, I will work tirelessly to uphold these principles.

Trust in government must be earned, and I am committed to a DC government that is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people.
