I live in rural southeast Arizona, I am a marrried, 70 yr old Hispanic LGBTQ female. Committed to fighting for gun safety legislation, environmental protections,-especially around water use, passage of the ERA, green job creation, improving and adequately funding our education system, supporting a wealth tax to fund our social safety nets like universal health care, social security, school lunch programs, unemployment/disability insurance. I am concerned about the viability of our democracy & protecting our voting rights. This is my first time running for public office, my goal is to serve my community and represent my constituents, hope to be given the chance.
  • My campaign is about representation. My job is to work for the people in my district, to be available to and listen to their concerns and issues and advocate for them at the state level.
  • The health crisis and the resultant economic disruptions will require innovative and creative solutions to bring our communities back to health. It will require vision, leadership and cooperation at the local and state level. I look forward to being a part of the solutions for the challenges ahead.
  • Our country is at war with itself. I bring a message of peace because it is the only way we will be able to create a future for ourselves and our children. We need to end the divisiveness and assert the values of inclusion, cooperation and community. This is what my election will be about.
Gun safety legislation is what motivated me to get involved in running for office. However it is difficult to not also be as passionate about our environment and protecting it for our safety and health, particularly water issues. I am concerned about wealth inequality and the effects it has on the health of our communities and world. I feel a robust and well funded educational system for all citizens is the foundation of a successful and compassionate society. Creating economic opportunity and jobs that benefit all members of a community, particularly those who tend to fall outside traditional pathways, like the disabled or minorities. I am passionate about representing my constituents, meeting with them, learning of their concerns and advocating for them with legislation.
I have unending admiration for ex-presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. She embodies all the qualities of an elected official that I would want to emulate. She is a problem solver and is not afraid to champion new ways of creating solutions. She knows how to work as a team member and also be a leader when called for. She is intelligent but humble about it. She is brave but also seems to have an awareness of her strengths and weaknesses. She has a great sense of humor and can laugh at herself. She is honest and trustworthy and has great compassion for the underprivileged. She is a fighter for the people and seems tireless.
There are books, essays and films about Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The last movie "On the Basis of Sex" is a good primer and overview into her struggles of being one of the fist women to attend law school and graduate. She has been a fighter for equality under the law her whole life, though she does not let her passion for fairness blind her to biases she may possess. Even now despite advancing age and infirmities she is involved and engaged and seems no less committed to advancing the cause of equality before the law.
Wanting to engage in employment that is considered non-traditional for females and primarily male dominated, specifically my employment in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. Also identifying as a gay woman in my late teens during the 60"s & 70"s was very isolating and challenging.
One of the greatest challenges we face in the world and hence for our nation and our state are the effects of climate change. Climate change has brought severe weather conditions one of them being widespread drought and the shortage of viable water supplies. Living in a desert community and experiencing the decline of water resources will affect every aspect of our states health and welfare. If we have poor quality water or no water it will affect our ability for growth, which will affect job creation and which in turn will affect state revenues. It's all connected. We need to start now transitioning to an economy that supports and creates jobs in sustainable energy supplies, like sun and wind. We need to create the educational and training infrastructure to fill these types of occupations, which in itself will be a boost to our economy for more job creation and potential revenues.
In Arizona there is an independent redistricting committee. I support it's role in deciding the redistricting process. However there is a problem with the makeup of the committee and who decides will be on the committee . Currently there is a tendency for one party to be unfairly represented, this needs to be addressed and corrected because it will influence the redistricting process.
I am an advocate for gun safety reform at the federal level and state level. We have all been subjected to the media coverage of mass shootings in our communities, in particular the report that our representative Gabie Giffords had been the victim of one of them. I have followed her story and it has been inspiring to me to witness her painstaking recovery back to health and eventual involvement again in the political arena. Undoubtedly she and her family continue to struggle with the challenges her near death experience has entailed but she is someone who will forever be a model and inspiration to me as I navigate political campaigning and engagement.
