Rosalyn Richter
Rosalyn H. Richter was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department. She was designated to this position in March 2009. She first became a state supreme court justice in 2003.[1] Richter ran unopposed for re-election in the general election on November 8, 2016. She retired in July 2020.
Education
Richter received her B.A. from Barnard College in 1976 and her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1979.[1]
Career
Richter began her legal career in 1979 as an associate in the law office of Carol Lefcourt. In 1980, she became the executive director & special project attorney of the Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund. Three years later, she joined the Kings County District Attorney's Office as the supervisor of the Appeals Bureau. She became an administrative law judge in 1987 and worked in the New York City Office of Administrative Trials & Hearings until 1990. She then joined the New York City Criminal Court until 1996, when she began judging on the Midtown Community Court. She was named supervising judge of the Bronx Criminal Court in 1998 after serving as acting supreme court justice for the Bronx County Criminal Term in 1997. She worked as acting supreme court justice from 2000 to 2002, and was officially elected to the State Supreme Court of New York County in November 2002 (effective January 2003). During her time on this court, she presided over the general civil IAS part, guardianship matters and a matrimonial part. She was designated to the appellate division in 2009.[1]
Elections
2016
New York held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on September 13, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wish to run in this election was July 14, 2016.[2] The following candidates ran in the general election for nine open seats on the New York Supreme Court 1st Judicial District.[3]
