Candidate website
Pedersen highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:
“ | I have a vision for the Long Beach Unified District. I believe we need to do a better job of opening the door for more opportunities for both students and parents.
I decided to run for school board after over 30 years of service as both a Long Beach teacher and administrator. I decided to run for school board because I wanted to continue to make a difference in one of the best school districts in the country. Also I have seen firsthand how school board members could either be an important part of ensuring that our district was on the cutting edge of innovation and reform or be part of the bureaucracy and inefficiency that a large district creates. Here is my Six Point Plan: 1. FIGHT FOR SMALLER CLASS SIZE by thoroughly examining our budget priorities. I would look to help our students by increasing support staff at schools especially counselors and college aides. 2. PROMOTE TRANSPARENCY BY CREATING EASIER ACCESS TO SCHOOL AND DISTRICT INFORMATION through the use of technology and greater outreach to parents. This would include improving our school board website and making school board meetings more convenient so working parents can attend or monitor them. 3. ENSURE THAT THE LATEST AND BEST TECHNOLOGIES ARE AVAILABLE TO OUR STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOMS. With the digital age upon us, I want our schools to be up to date with technology as a tool for both teachers and students. 4. PROVIDE PARENTS WITH A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF COMMON CORE STANDARDS. The Common Core standards encourage students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. We need to do a better job of explaining these standards to our parents and giving them the tools they need to help their children at home. 5. PROMOTE CAREERS AND INTERNSHIPS. Internships while students are in high school can help them decide on a career and can lead to part-time jobs while they are going to college. 6. FIGHT FOR ADULT EDUCATION. With funding available, we can now bring back adult education in the K-12 arena. Community colleges have realized that adult school is the agency to help those who had not been successful in high school, and to help parents and their children by providing parenting classes and other support. My unique background of classroom experience along with administrative insight helps me see that there are better opportunities to prepare our students for the 21st century. I hope I can count on your vote.[5] |
