Lien was a student at the University of North Dakota.[1]

Lien ran in the 2012 election for North Dakota Senate District 42. Lien ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 12. He was defeated by incumbent Mac Schneider (D) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
