Campaign themes

2014

Chaney's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Education

  • Excerpt: "I believe a strong public education system is paramount to a strong business economy for our state. The fact that public education funding in Oklahoma is at a 6 year low is a big concern. However, just throwing money at the issue is not the solution. We need to continue to move to a system of High Standards and High Accountability. A system that rewards high performance, encourages competition and gives parents, educators and citizens as a whole a VOICE in the process. I DO NOT support Common Core State Standards. I support High Academics Standards. I strongly believe WE know best what academic standards are needed in Oklahoma. I DO NOT support taking our state and local control over education and turning it over to the federal government."

Agriculture

  • Excerpt: "We continue to face many agricultural challenges in our state. Oklahoma can and must help meet our countries growing agriculture needs. In terms of revenue generated, Oklahoma's top five agricultural products are cattle and calves, hogs, broilers (young chickens), wheat and dairy products. Beef cattle production is the leading source of agricultural income in the state. Our most valuable crop is wheat. We must continue to ensure support for these critical industries for our district."

Constitution & The 2nd Amendment

  • Excerpt: "Without question I am a strong supporter of the Right to Bear Arms. I myself am a member of the NRA and a licensed gun carrier. I am a proud American and a supporter of the U.S. Constitution. I believe it was originally intended to guard the rights of the states and to allow states to make their own decisions. I support the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which is the basis of States Rights. When 75% of the population of a state speak on an issue and one federal judge can disregard the voices of the people, that is an issue that should not be taken lightly by our state leaders."

Roads and Bridges

  • Excerpt: "Transportation is vital to Oklahoma's economy. We must continue a program of maintaining our highway systems and keep our roads and bridges safe. Our highway system is key to economic growth and prosperity. We must also review and support continued use of the rail system."

Taxes

  • Excerpt: "Taxes are never a popular topic, but one that requires real dialogue. Our state has fewer funds than from years past to support all of our state programs. As a result, I support a "trigger" that when the economy has recovered and we have increased revenues, the state returns to the hard working citizens of the state what they have earned. I believe in a "right sized" government that is responsive and accountable to it's citizens. While it is popular in an election year and while running for office to promote unrealistic tax cuts, I feel it is better to have an open and honest dialogue. If elected I would request a study be conducted on the "fair" tax plan as a possible alternative to our current tax plan."
