Roy Laverne Stephenson (1917-1982) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

Judicial career

Eighth Circuit

Stephenson was nominated to the Eighth Circuit by President Richard Nixon on June 1, 1971, to a seat vacated by Martin Van Oosterhout; he was confirmed by the Senate on June 18, 1971, and received commission on June 22. He assumed senior status on April 1, 1982, and died shortly thereafter, on November 5, 1982.[1]

Southern District of Iowa

Stephenson was nominated to the Southern District of Iowa by President Richard Nixon on May 16, 1960, to a seat vacated by Edwin Hicklin; he was confirmed by the Senate on May 26, 1960, and received commission on May 31. He served as chief judge from 1961 until he was advanced to the Eighth Circuit on July 6, 1971.[1] Stephenson was succeeded in this position by William Stuart.
