Ruben Cortez Jr. (Democratic Party) was a member of the Texas State Board of Education, representing District 2. He assumed office in 2013. He left office on January 1, 2023.

Cortez (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Texas House of Representatives to represent District 37. He lost in the Democratic primary runoff on May 28, 2024.

Biography

Prior to his election to the state board, Cortez had served on the Board of Trustees of the Brownsville Independent School District. He has also served on the Council of Urban Boards of Education and the National School Board Association's prekindergarten legislative committee.[1]

Political career

Texas State Board of Education (2013-2023)

Cortez was first elected to the board in November 2012 and took office in January 2013. He was re-elected in 2014. On January 31, 2017, Cortez was elected to a two-year term as the board's secretary.[2]
