Runoff elections for two Houston ISD incumbents on Saturday
December 10, 2015
Two seats on the Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees will be up for a runoff election on December 12, 2015.[1] Although District II incumbent Rhonda Skillern-Jones and District III incumbent Manuel Rodriguez Jr. each received the most votes in their respective districts' general elections on November 3, 2015, neither claimed a majority of the votes, requiring a runoff for both seats.
Skillern-Jones will face the runner-up from the District II general election, Larry Williams. Skillern-Jones was first elected to the board in 2011 and currently serves as its president. Rodriguez is set to compete against the District III second-place candidate, Jose Leal. Rodriguez originally joined the board in 2003 and is its first vice president.
The district is in the midst of a search for a new superintendent after the unexpected resignation of Dr. Terry Grier.[2] Grier's official last day will be February 29, 2016, and the district is expected to appoint an interim superintendent as it continues the search. The district also faces a $211 million bond deficit, an audit of which was announced just two weeks before Grier announced his resignation.[3]
