Rupande Mehta is an analytical specialist working in sourcing and negotiations on multi-million dollar projects, employing her skills in team building and conflict resolution for a Fortune 100 company in New Jersey. She has an MBA and a Master's in Public Administration where she was a Fellow of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers. She currently lives in Denville with her husband and daughter.
  • Especially in light of COVID-19, we need to expand the ACA and transition to a fully functioning State-Based Exchange to provide quality, affordable healthcare for all. We need to open the economy back up on a measured, meaningful data-driven approach designed by healthcare professionals to determine our success both economically and socially.
  • We need a proactive approach to deal with climate change (address events at Lake Hopatcong, damage from high winds & wildfires), transition to clean energy & create a green economy. We need to incentivize municipalities to take up stormwater utilities programs to reduce water pollutants & create plantings like rain gardens & green roofs. Our infrastructure needs repair and upgrade. We need to: fix TTF legislation, fund NJ Transit & provide oversight, build resilient infrastructure that withstands storms & other climate disasters, build town appropriate infrastructure, & invest in green infrastructure.
  • It's no secret that taxes are putting NJ families under pressure. If elected to the Senate, I will explore every method from consolidation of services to alternate revenue sources to keep LD-25 families homes affordable. We need to look at more towns sharing services like EMS, sewage, court, etc. This may help us stabilize property taxes. I would also look at centralizing administrative cores of schools so we eliminate needless bureaucracy. Centralization does not mean busing children far away, local schools will remain the same; but the central administrative core will be consolidated. If the 2020 Marijuana Legalization Amendment passes, I would like to bring economic parity & use revenue to enhance our standard of living, stabilize our pr
I am deeply passionate about the environment - we need to protect and preserve this world for the next generation. If elected to the Senate, I will work to ensure that disasters like those at Lake Hopatcong are not repeated and we adopt a proactive approach towards tackling issues of climate change; up to and including making NJ a leader in green technology.

I also passionately believe in meaningful gun reform and ensuring the residents of this district are kept safe and children learn in an environment free from fear. I would work with Moms Demand Action and legislators in the state to ensure that we pursue a policy that keeps everyone safe from meaningless gun violence.

I am an advocate for women's rights & having worked as a domestic violence liaison, in the past, means I understand the intricacies of abuse and assault. My experience as a domestic violence liaison made me consider running for office - so whether the issue is equal pay or standing up for the rights of victims, I will always work towards ensuring marginalized communities have a voice & rights in our government.
I believe empathy and honesty are the most important characteristics for an elected official. Empathy because the official needs to connect with a cross section of people; all of whom have different experiences, problems and need a variety of solutions. If an elected official isn't able to understand and relate to their problems, it will be very hard for her to take them seriously and do something about it.

It is also important to be honest and stay truthful at all times because if a constituent cannot trust you or take your word, how can they believe when they say you will fight for them and work to make their life easier? Any elected official needs the trust of her constituents to continue doing her work.
I was in 12 in Mumbai, India when the Babri Masjid fell. A group of Hindu extremists demolished the masjid in another state and as a result Mumbai was plunged into Hindu-Muslim riots. I remember the city under curfew with no one able to leave their homes. News coverage back then wasn't as it is now so once a day we would wait for the local channels to tell us what was really going on. Although I didn't live in the part of the city most affected by the rioting, killing and looting, I remember a real sense of palpable fear in the air as no one knew if the rioting would spread or when it would end.

Eventually, things returned to normal but the divide and rule policy established by the British during their reign still simmers between Hindus and Muslims in India.
I would want to be Captain Marvel because no matter how hard she falls, she always gets back up. I believe that's a great quality for someone who wants to be an elected official. Besides, being able to fly and lighting up are also great qualities!
I am a survivor of abuse. Starting from age 6 to age 21, when I finally left India I have endured physical, emotional and sexual violence. Leaving all that behind was the easy thing but dealing with the mental scars the abuse left behind has not been easy. Daily tasks that are normal for other people can become a challenge for someone dealing with a vast amount of emotional abuse baggage. Starting a family, having kids, all bring back memories of trauma. I have devoted vast amounts of time to deal with the mental after effects my abuse left behind. But this abuse has also made me stronger and more empathetic. I understand what our veterans go through, how difficult it is for them sometimes to readjust and why we must do everything we can to give them the care they need and rightfully deserve. It has made me understand the importance of doing right by our children, our elderly and our community to ensure that no one goes through what I did and to build a society that gives everyone a chance, regardless of who they are.
I think anyone running for state level office should have experience running a campaign before. That said, I do not believe experience in politics is a pre-requisite. An understanding is helpful but it is the myriad of experiences, across all levels, that is missing from out politics right now that can help make it more empathetic. global, personal and universal. I believe I bring a unique set of skills that isn't present in the legislature at the moment: immigrant woman, abuse survivor, wife and mother with both profit and non profit sector experience. Its the sum of all these experiences that I will bring to the legislature and my district.
It is extremely helpful to have relationships with other legislators. No one can function in a vacuum and the same applies for legislators. If elected to the Senate, I will work on building relationships with all legislators; Democrat and Republican. We all want what is best for our state; we may disagree on the methods and the ways to get there but in order to build a stronger state that can be resilient and take on challenges, it is imperative that the legislating body has respect for each other, can understand each other and their experiences and work together to achieve goals. And working together is impossible if folks do not have a good relationship with each other.
Environment & Energy: climate change is one of the biggest threats facing humankind. We need an urgent plan to deal with the human effects of climate change. I believe with my background in corporate America, I can work on this committee to ensure we invest in turning the clock back, create jobs that create meaningful opportunities for all LD-25 residents & implement the NJ Energy Master Plan

Economic growth: this committee ties in with my 15+ years of professional career and my skills of negotiation and completing multi-million dollar projects on time and on budget
