Rupert Murdoch is the retired executive chairman of News Corp and retired CEO of 21st Century Fox, the parent company of the FOX broadcasting networks.[1] As of August 2025, his net worth was $24.1 billion, according to Forbes.[2]

Biography

Originally from Australia, Rupert Murdoch took over News Limited, an Australian based news company, in 1954 and expanded it to News Corporation with the acquisition of the Sydney Daily Mirror and the establishment of a national newspaper, The Australian.[1] Murdoch's newspaper holdings in the United Kingdom and Australia continued to grow over the course of the 20th century.[1]

Work and activities

Leadership of Fox

In the 1980s, Murdoch expanded News Corporation into broadcast news when he purchased 20th Century Fox in 1985; he then established a network of Fox broadcast stations, including Fox News in 1996. The channel was founded, according to the Los Angeles Times, as a "refuge for viewers fed up with real or perceived liberal bias elsewhere in the media."[3]

In June 2015, Murdoch announced he would step down as the CEO of 21st Century Fox by the end of 2016. CNBC reported at the time that "Rupert Murdoch, who through the Murdoch Family Trust controls 39.4 percent of the voting shares at Fox, is not expected to change much of what he does day to day as chairman of both Fox and News Corp., but the change at Fox is clearly an acknowledgement that the next generation of Murdochs is ready to take its place in leading the media giant."[4] He stepped down as chairman of the board at Fox in 2023.[5]

Leadership of News Corp

Murdoch previously served as chairman of News Corp, which has a stake in a number of worldwide news publications, including:

  • The Times (London)
  • New York Post
  • Harper Collins Publishers

In 2007, News Corp purchased Dow Jones, the parent company of Barrons and The Wall Street Journal.[1]

On November 15, 2023 Rupert Murdoch stepped down from his position as chairman of News Corp., turning over control to his son, Lachlan.[6] In a story on the announcement, NPR's David Folkenflik wrote Murdoch "ultimately dominated journalism and politics in Australia, the U.K. and the U.S., often promoting politicians who embraced his conservative beliefs."[7]
