Russell Evans Smith (1908-1990) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Montana. Smith was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson on February 16, 1966, and commission the next day. From 1968-1978, he served as the chief judge. He assumed senior status on May 12, 1979, and served in that capacity until his death on March 29, 1990.[1]

Judicial career

Smith was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson on February 16, 1966, to a seat vacated by Judge William Murray. Smith was confirmed by the Senate on March 25, 1966, and received commission the next day. From 1968 to 1978, he served as chief judge of the court. He assumed senior status on May 12, 1979. Smith served the District of Montana until his death on March 29, 1990.[1] Smith was succeeded in this position by Judge Paul Hatfield.
