Ruth Balkin
Ruth C. Balkin was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Department. She was designated to this position on December 22, 2006.[1] She left office on December 31, 2020.[2]
Education
Judge Balkin received a B.A. degree from Adelphi University in 1973 and a J.D. degree from St. John's University School of Law in 1976.[1]
Career
Judge Balkin began her legal career in 1977 as an associate of the law firm Sutter, Moffatt, Yannelli & Zevin. She worked with this firm until 1984, when she became a partner in the firm Sutter, Balkin, Marten & Regan. In 1986, she became an associate of Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein. From 1987 through 1994, she worked as Counsel to the Presiding Supervisor and Town Board of Hempstead, NY. She became a judge of the Nassau County Family Court in January of 1995 and she held this position until May of 2004. She then served an interim appointment on the Nassau County Supreme Court until the end of 2004. From 2002 to 2004, she was the presiding judge of the Nassau County Family Treatment Court and from January 2003 to September 2004, she was also the supervising judge of the Nassau County Family Court. She was named Justice of the Supreme Court for Nassau County in January of 2005 and was designated to the Appellate Division on December 22, 2006.[1]
