I am Ruth Robinson, Candidate for Circuit Court Judge, Place 20, Domestic Relations Court. I am a mom and attorney of nearly 20 years. I am from Birmingham. I have represented people statewide in various cases. I began my career as a civil litigator. I then took time to raise my young children and stayed at home. I have three boys who I'm extremely proud of. I divorced in 2013 and made the decision to make a difference in the world by helping people most in need and found it in the areas of family and criminal law.
- It's all about the kids in domestic relations court.
- Divorce doesn't have to mean failure for the children.
- Serve others and you will serve meaningfully.
Prison reform, mass incarceration, government transparency, respect and fairness for all people
I am inspired by people who have overcome extreme loss and overcame that loss to inspire others. My mom is one of those people because she overcame my brother's tragic loss and inspires me to be a better mom, a better cook for my family and a more generous person in general.
The Netflix documentary series, The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, is a powerful warning for all those who advocate for children to stand up for these children because the time is now.
The characteristics most important for an elected official to have are: 1) honesty, 2) love and compassion for all people regardless of class, race or sexual preference; 3) empathy for the hardships that people face and have faced; 4) unbiasedness which is the ability to see past all the superficial things and focus on the issues at hand; 5) the ability to tell fact from fiction and sort out a complex case; and 6) decisiveness.
The qualities I possess that will make me a successful officeholder are the ability to determine truth from lies by careful listening and ensuring there is consistency in a person's testimony. I myself have faced adversity and I want to ensure the courtroom is a place where all are treated fairly, with respect. When I have made mistakes, I am forthright about that so that I can correct the error.
The core responsibilities for an elected official are to humbly work diligently for the citizens who elected him or her. Other core responsibilities are efficiency and fairness.
I want to leave a lasting legacy of putting the children first in domestic relations court.
I met my namesake, Ruth, who was my great-grandmother and I remember she had a cornucopia and it was Thanksgiving.
I worked in a bakery to save for my first car. I worked there for one summer.
In my personal life, at times, I have struggled with remaining loyal to certain people who were undeserving of that loyalty.
This is the judicial office that influences whether fathers and mothers continue to be a part of their children's lives after a divorce. In today's world, inspirational role models are key to a child's success. I want to see families work together, even during and after a divorce, to make it all about the kids.
As a judge, I will follow the law and determine the truth through the testimony and evidence that is given in court.
Ruth Bader Ginsberg. My name is Ruth. I also like Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Sue Bell Cobb. Justice Cobb has been inspirational as a judge and has advocated for criminal justice reform in Alabama, more so than other judges here.
Yes. A judge must understand the perspective of a person that is awaiting the court's judgment. A judge must have street credibility and experience working with the downtrodden so that the court is successful in ordering the proper remedies.
I have been rated by my former clients who have all been satisfied with my representation.
I want to change lives for the better by devoting myself to solving complex family issues.
It could be beneficial for a judge to have previous governmental experience, but not always because like everyone, judges could suffer from burn out or become desensitized to the people that are their constituents. Fresh perspectives can be beneficial because progress is never made by doing the same thing that previously failed to work.
My concern is for the children. In domestic relations, there are too many times when the couple facing divorce puts the children last on the list of their priorities and even uses the children as weapons to injure the other party. The problem is that these children didn't ask to be here, they didn't ask to be born, but they are the ones that are made to suffer in such cases. I want to ensure that the family unit has a successful change and that, whenever possible, both parents continue to be involved in their children's lives.
The greatest opportunity for me is to inspire our children and young adults to be leaders and helpers. I want people to see that doing small things with great love can, actually, change the world. We all must work together, in unity, to overcome hardship. I want the children in our state, and especially my courtroom, to know that my decisions are always made with them in the front of the line.
As far as serving people in a higher court in the future, I will leave that decision open. My opinion now is that I am looking forward to helping people on the ground level and I do believe I will be best at doing just that. I feel that, by working on the ground level, I will have a greater opportunity to help actual people who are truly struggling. With that said, I recognize the need for appellate courts and greatly respect those men and women who serve in those roles.
I do not think that Bar Association ratings are always correct because there are attorneys who are simply popular with their colleagues, but not their clients. To me, the better perspective is by that future judge's former clients and whether her clients were satisfied with the professional representation and care with which she handled the person's legal issues.
