Candidate Connection

Ryan Berman completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Berman's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Reforming our auto no-fault laws to make auto insurance more affordable to drivers. Expanding our freedom of information act, to make our government more transparent. Prioritizing our budget to make sure that our tax money goes toward its intended purposes (i.e. the roads).

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Access to public information, and having a more transparent and accountable government. We need to expand our freedom of information act, and allow more and modern technology use to help reduce costs, as well as remove monetary barriers to that public access of information. Transparency leads to greater accountability.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Intelligence and honesty/integrity.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I'm an independent problem solver and I'll do what's best for our entire community. I'm open, accessible and transparent. I'm also very reasonable, responsible, family oriented and honest. As an attorney, reserve police officer, small business owner, and most importantly being a husband and father, I share the same concerns as many in the district, and that's why I'm running for state representative - to ensure our community remains a great place to live, work and raise a family. I'm a lifelong resident of the 39th District, and very active and involved. My wife, Stacie, is a kindergarten teacher at Temple Israel. We've been married for over 13 years and have two beautiful daughters, Sloane (11) and Morgan (9.) My father's side is Jewish, and my mother's side is Catholic, so I get to say that I grew up in the best of both worlds! I have a broad based background and varied experiences that enable me to connect with and understand the concerns of the residents within our district. We need more transparency overall within our government, and to ensure our tax dollars are being allocated appropriately. I'll make sure that taxes are being spent for their intended purpose.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The core responsibility of a State Representative is to vote for and do what's in the best interests of the constituents in the community and state.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

State Representatives should have the knowledge or skillset to be effective advocates for their communities on day one.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

It's very beneficial for representatives to build relationships with each other, as there are 110 of them here in Michigan. You can't accomplish anything without the support of at least a majority, and it's much easier to get things done when you know each other or have a personal relationship. This allows a better understanding of each person's positions and where they're coming from/their perspective on issues.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Michigan

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Michigan scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
