I am running for State House District 42. I chose to run because I feel like our state legislature is very out of touch. Most of our legislators do not face meaningful competition outside of their primary election, and so feel little need to appeal to independent voters. They buckle to pressure from the fringes of their respective parties as a result rather than trying to represent what the voters in their district actually want. A perfect example of this is how the legislature gutted or repealed recent ballot propositions that had widespread popular support, such as the recent propositions on medical marijuana, medicaid expansion and independent redistricting.

The legislature feels like they know better than the people of this state. I think the legislature should actually represent the will of the people.

I look up to Mitt Romney and Ben McAdams, because they are both moderate legislators who think before they vote, and don't blindly follow the party line.
I take good ideas from wherever I can find them. I read books written by both the left and the right to learn more about what is important to them and what they think the solutions are. I don't think there is any one book that truly exemplifies my philosophy.
It is critical that an elected official be willing to listen to his constituents, including those he disagrees with, to understand what their needs and priorities are. It's critical that they are humble enough to know that they don't know all the answers and be willing to learn.
I am a pragmatic problem solver that will work with members of both parties to solve problems in Utah.
The core responsibilities of a legislator are to fund the operations of the state government, and pass laws that protect the rights of all Utahns.
I want to be remembered as someone who put people before ideology.
I was seventeen years old, a freshman in college, when the 9/11 attacks occurred.
My very first job was as a roofing assistant. I was 14 years old and helped lay asphalt shingles to pay my way to scout camp.
Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson. I love it because it exemplifies both excellent writing and excellent world building in the same great book.
Richard Sharpe, because nothing can stop him from saving the day.
Learning to cope with my degenerative eye disease that has made me legally blind has been a struggle in my life.
Our greatest challenge is ensuring that our infrastructure can keep up with our rapid growth, and ensuring that our public schools are able to succeed.
The governor's job is to execute the will of the people. The legislature's job is to represent the people and give the governor a vision to execute, and a plan to fund our state government.
Building relationships with other legislators of both parties will be key to getting any meaningful reform passed.
