Burg was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, but he grew up mainly in Sheboygan.[1] He graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1987 and earned a bachelor's degree in organizational administration from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2013. His professional experience includes serving as an economic support specialist for Sheboygan County Health and Human Services.[2]

Three of the nine seats on the Sheboygan Area School District Board of Education in Wisconsin were up for at-large general election on April 3, 2018. Incumbents Ryan Burg, Mary Beth Martin, and Larry Samet were unopposed in their bids for re-election.[3]

Three at-large board seats were up for election on April 7, 2015. Incumbents Ryan Burg, John Hill and Barbara Tuszynski's seats were up for election. Burg and Tuszynski sought re-election, while Hill did not file to run for another term.

The two incumbents faced challengers Mary Beth Martin, Peter Madden and Denis Schmideler. Andrew Blindauer also filed candidacy papers for the race, but did not submit nomination papers. Burg and Tusynski won re-election while Martin won her first term on the board.
