Ryan Deems has lived in Harrison County almost all of his life. He attended and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Glenville State College in 2011. He received a Master in Educational Technology from Boise State University in 2018.

Professionally, Ryan started teaching at Westside High School in Wyoming County. He held the position of band director at Westside HS from 2011 to 2014. He was hired by Harrison County schools in August of 2014 and teaches general music, orchestra, and band. Ryan became a National Board Certified teacher in 2019. He also serves as the President of the Harrison County Education Association.

Politically, this is the first time Ryan has ran for office. He is a proud signer of the West Virginia Can't Wait Pledge. As a signer, he refuses to accept corporate PAC money, cross a picket line, or hide from a debate.

Ryan lives in Clarksburg with his wife, Kaitlin, who is a special education teacher. They have three dogs: Max, Jake, and Kia.
  • We need to "Invest in West Virginia"
  • For too long, those with the least have had to bear the most while those with the most bear the least. We need a government that works for its people, not the Good Ol' Boys
  • We need politicians who understand the struggle of every day people and know what it means to be a public servant
Education is the key to our future success. As a teacher, I hope to lend my personal knowledge and experience working with students and parents to help transform our public schools into a place that nurtures and prepares our kids for success.

Small business is the life blood of our economy. While the current legislature has been chasing large businesses with tax cut after tax cut to no avail, I propose that we invest in ourselves. We should strive to make West Virginia the best place to operate a small business.

Through my participation in the WV Teachers' strike, I have realized how powerful the collective voice of employees can be. We need to expand access to unions for everyone, repeal "Right-to-Work", and ensure a living wage and affordable benefits for all.

Finally, we need to keep our young people here and attract others from surrounding states. We can do this by improving our education system, investing in our economy (small business), , and enacting policies to attract them, such as universal child care and student loan forgiveness.
An elected official needs to be trustworthy. Citizens need to have a level of trust in their officials and know they will work for everyone, not a select few or lobbyists.

An elected official needs to be a good listener. They need to be available to listen to the concerns of their people.

An elected official also needs to be courageous. Doing the right thing is not always easy, and an elected official has to have the conviction to stand up and fight for their people.
I do not plan (or want) to be a career politician. My main goals are to help improve public education in our state and help everyone live with more dignity. I think it is a shame and a failure on our state that over 100,000 people have to consistently use food banks to survive. I think it is insulting that we are not keeping our young people here.

When my political career is over, I want people to say, "Ryan Deems wasn't afraid to speak his mind and stand up for his constituents and always worked in good faith to move West Virginia forward".
My first job was working for Harrison County Parks and Recreation when I was 16. I had gone through the programs they offered as a kid and had hung around until I was old enough to be employed there. I started as a playground leader. It was my job to work with other high school and college-aged kids to supervise anywhere from 50-200 kids at a local playground. I would help organize field trips and activities for the kids. One of our favorite games was 4 square!

While I did this in the summer, I worked at various programs that Parks and Recreation offered during the school year. I worked as a tutor at an after-school program for two years. I also helped coach and referee youth and high school basketball games in the winter, while I would help coordinate, referee, and coach "T"-ball in the summer. I also served as an educational tour guide for their educational enrichment displays during the school year.

Working at Harrison County Parks and Recreation was a great experience. My coworkers became like family to me and I learned many valuable lessons about working with kids.

I think it is important for our educators to be well-educated and open-minded, but not necessarily have political experience. I believe our society is too focused on a "top-down" approach, when we should be focused on a "bottoms-up", grassroots approach. When we allow the same few, entrenched politicians make decisions for us, nothing good comes from it. I am a firm believer in the saying "We need 1,000 leaders, not 1". We need people from all walks of life to serve in our government so it's truly representative.
I think our state's greatest challenge will be keeping people in our state. We are currently losing too many of our young people to better opportunities. I believe we can easily fix this problem by addressing our education system, investing in small businesses, providing a living wage, and providing widespread broadband access.
I would want to serve on the Education committee because of my professional background. I would also like to be involved with committees that address broadband issues because my district would be prime for further economic development with more broadband access.
