Ryan Fishman was a 2014 Democratic candidate for District 13 of the Michigan State Senate.[1]

Fishman switched parties from Republican to Democratic in mid 2013. In June 2013, Fishman wrote an op-ed piece in the Detroit Free Press suggesting fellow Republicans focus on national security and fiscal conservatism as key issues. In September 2013, he filed to run for the Michigan Senate as a Democrat, saying it made more sense to run as one because the Democratic Party had more space for moderate voices.[2]

Campaign themes

2014

Fishman's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

Creating New, Sustainable Industries in Michigan

  • Excerpt: "If elected to the Senate, I will work with the business and labor communities to draft legislation that benefits workers and small business owners alike. Michigan’s auto and manufacturing industries continue to drive our economy, and I still stand up for the men and women who make that work possible."

Restore Property Values and Promote Regional Growth

  • Excerpt: "Michigan’s economic downturn and the foreclosure crisis that engulfed our state had a dramatic impact on our neighborhoods and our property values. We have to work to rebuild our communities and make our neighborhoods vibrant places where people want to move to, not away from."

Reinvest in Public Education

  • Excerpt: "If elected to the State Senate, I will fight to increase funding for public education, protect School Aid Fund dollars to ensure they go to K-12 schools as Constitutionally-intended, push for accountability for both parents and teachers, and ensure we have adequate checks and balances on cyber schools and other for-profit education endeavors to ensure they are focused on our students."

Fix Our Infrastructure

  • Excerpt: "I want to go to Lansing to put the partisan politics aside and work collaboratively with my colleagues to invest in our infrastructure, improve our roads and increase our public safety. Businesses and residents alike depend on our infrastructure, and we need to make sure they are a selling point for our communities, not a reason to go elsewhere."

Bring Young People Back to Michigan

  • Excerpt: "I want to go to Lansing to bring a voice to Michigan’s young college graduates and aspiring entrepreneurs. We have the creativity and ingenuity to drive our economy, but state government is putting up hurdles instead of tearing down barriers."
