Ryan Kelley (Republican Party) ran for election for Governor of Michigan. He lost in the Republican primary on August 2, 2022.

On June 9, 2022, Kelley was arrested on four misdemeanor charges related to his alleged participation in the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2021. [1]

Biography

Kelley attended Grand Rapids Community College before beginning his career at Ameritech, which later became AT&T. In 2011, Kelley began to work in real estate investment, opening his own firm in 2019.[2]

Arrest on federal misdemeanor criminal charges (2022)

On June 9, 2022, Kelley was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on charges related to his alleged participation in the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2021. Kelly was charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, knowingly engaging in any act of physical violence against person or property in any restricted building or grounds, and willfully injuring or committing any depredation against any property of the United States. All four charges are misdemeanors. Each charge carries a maximum of up to one year in federal prison or a $100,000 fine per charge.[1][3][4]

Kelley was released on a personal recognizance bond on June 9. In a court hearing on June 16, 2022, Kelley was ordered to surrender his guns while awaiting trial. He appeared in federal court on July 7, 2022, and pleaded not guilty. In regard to January 6 Capitol breach, Kelley said, “We were there protesting the government because we don’t like the results of the 2020 election, the process of how it happened, and we have that First Amendment right.”[5][6][7][8]

On July 27, 2023, Kelley pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor charge of entering and remaining on public grounds. [9]

On September 17, 2023, Kelley was sentenced to 60 days in prison. [10]
