Ryan Nance was a candidate for Ward 5 representative on the Bakersfield City Council in California. Nance was defeated in the special election on June 6, 2017. Although city council elections in Bakersfield are officially nonpartisan, Nance described himself as a member of the Republican Party at the time of his 2017 candidacy.[1]

Nance was also a candidate for the Ward 5 seat in 2016, when he lost in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Nance graduated from Foothill High School and did a trade apprenticeship program at Bakersfield College. In May 2017, Nance identified himself as president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 743. His professional experience includes being a carpenter and trainer of construction workers.[1]

The mayor's chair and three seats on the Bakersfield City Council were up for general election in 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 16, 2016. A primary was held on June 7, 2016, and the general election took place on November 8, 2016. Jeffrey Tkac defeated incumbent Harold Hanson and Ryan Nance in the Bakersfield City Council, Ward 5 general election.[2]

He considers job creation, public safety, and looking for creative ways to support Ward 5 families as top priorities. In his early years, he once built skate ramps for his neighbors to contribute to the happiness of his community. Now he hopes to build new roads and water infrastructure in Ward 5. This is one way he hopes to lead the job creation effort. Ryan knows a great deal about poverty and the struggles of finding work, the aspiring Ward 5 Council member is proud to say, 'carpentry brought my family out of poverty.' He swung a hammer for 22 years and has taught carpentry for 1 and a half years. He is currently the president of the local Carpenters Association and enjoys training the construction professionals of the future.[3][4]
