Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Solen's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Healthcare: The country needs to move toward a single-payer universal system that ensures all citizens are able to obtain the same high quality of care.
  • Economy: Employment has been on the rise, but it still is not good enough. Wages are stagnant, and have been for some time. We need to put a control on businesses relocating outside of the country for the tax benefits. If they are not in our country by registration, they should be treated like any other foreign company, including tariffs and restrictions regardless of where their manufacturing actually takes place.
  • Education: Higher education is expensive, and has tuition rates that increase almost annually. This often results in loans that cripple students' finances for many years. I have a hard time declaring that all higher education should be free. However, I do believe that covering the cost of the first two years at a state school would certainly help, as well as the ability to refinance student loans the same as any other loan. A cap on the percentage rate is also called for. My position on free or drastically reduced price education is slowly evolving.
  • National Debt: Pay off the national debt, and balance the budget.
  • Minimum Wage: If someone works 40 hours per week, they should be able to make a livable wage. In addition, by increasing consumers' ability to purchase, businesses win through increased sales. The minimum wage needs to be tied in some way to the poverty metric.
