Ryan Stewart was the New Mexico Secretary of Education. He assumed office on September 3, 2019. He left office on August 20, 2021.

Stewart was first appointed to the position by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) on August 12, 2019.[1] He resigned from office on August 20, 2021, citing health issues in his family as the reason for his resignation.[2]

The New Mexico Secretary of Education is an appointed state executive position in the New Mexico state government. The secretary serves as head of the state Public Education Department. In that role, the secretary is responsible for overseeing New Mexico's education policy and program development, operational management of the department, and the distribution of educational funding.[3]

The secretary of education position was created in 2003, when the state's voters approved Ballot Question 1.[4]

After earning his graduate degree, Stewart completed a yearlong residency with the School District of Philadelphia. He then stayed at the district serving as a director of school improvement and innovation. After that, Stewart went to work with the nonprofit Partners in School Innovation in December 2017. He was serving in this role when Gov. Grisham selected him as the state's education secretary.[5]
