I am a US Army Soldier of Operation Iraqi Freedom and currently still serving in the Guard for nearly 21 years total. I'm also a Registered Nurse and have filled roles as a Case Manager, Inpatient caregiver, and Nurse Educator in both my hospital and Guard roles. I have 3 children in the AFSD and literally have "skin in the game." I'm also the son of a public school teacher of 26 years and have a thorough understanding of the obstacles that front line teachers face and the resources needed to support them so they can best assist students to achieve positive outcomes. Having been an officer in a Labor Union at the Dept of Veterans Affairs, I sympathize with workers living with strained budgets and in difficult working conditions.
- I am very concerned about recruiting and retention for quality teachers and administrators while understanding the vital importance of not overburdening our current taxpayers further with unnecessary frivolity. Extracurricular programs however fuel student success and enhance life-goals and should be given highest priority in maintenance and expansion of said programs.
- Working as a team with board members and administrators to become fiscally solvent will be of the highest of my priorities. I want to prevent future bond measures and referendums that increase taxes on Adams County citizens, especially those individuals on limited and fixed incomes. I will explore alternatives to prevent additional burdens on individual taxpayers and families in the form of property tax.
- Its time to get back to basics. Key educational goals and outcomes and give high performing students who desire college and professional degrees options to fast track to success while supporting others who are more interested in trades and skilled work by revitalizing those foundational electives in Middle & High School.
Common Sense (not Common Core) Education Reform
My paternal grandfather was a kind and humorous man and also a WWII Veteran. His stories of his Service, falling in love with my grandmother, and raising a family while working in a Steel Mill and being active in his faith community shaped me into the man I am today. He was a simple man, but made a profound influence on my life.
Waiting for Superman (2010).
Honesty and Integrity. If asked a difficult question which may polarize a particular voter/group the elected official should not pander, but instead take or defend their stand while being open to listening to their constituents. If they make a mistake, own up to it. Share successes and own failures. Be a Leader....not just a politician.
I have extensive experience working with interdisciplinary groups towards finding common ground to solving problems. One example is I was a part of a civil affairs team in Iraq where we would identify community projects in the Northern Iraqi province that would assist the fledgling government in growing and prospering while supporting the surrounding farms and communities. I also currently serve on a Labor Union Executive Board and am still active in policy formation in the National Guard.
Reviewing policy, fiscal management and support to the school administration in setting realistic goals and meeting operational requirements. Enhancing programs while being fiscally responsible and conservative.
A positive impact on my daughters and future grandchildren. If elected to the office, I want to help build a bridge into the new decade for our District with growth and meeting the known and unknown challenges head on and exceeding the standards that our predecessors have set.
I remember the Challenger explosion in 1986. I was about 6 years old at the time but I remember my parents and other adults talking about it and seeing it on the news. I remember thinking that it was very tragic that space shuttle full of astronauts perished in the disaster.
My very first job was as a field umpire for a little league baseball group in Phoenix, Arizona. I was about 13-14 at the time and made about $5-8 per game. I did this for 2 seasons.
Dune by Frank Herbert. It is the quintessential messiah story but involves politics, resources, science fiction, warring factions and scientific/technological breakthroughs spiced (pun intended) with culture and religion. I have read many of the series and follow on books from his son Brian Herbert.
I'm not sure. There are many stories and fictional films, books that I've enjoyed. This requires a bit more thought....
While I consider myself a Christian man of faith and I do take my faith very seriously, I personally struggle to sometimes let the fate of what must be, be if I believe I have a potential to affect a good outcome. I will often strive past the point where others would have "cut bait." I continue to trust God and ask for wisdom in improving my own discernment.
The families of Adams County to include Home Schooling families. The tax payers. The school employees of all levels and the district administrators setting goals and the schools' missions.
By recognizing that our district faces unique challenges with a statistically significant higher number of families living at/near the poverty line and the marked number of increased need of Special Education and assistance. These programs are costly and we do not receive additional state/federal funds despite this uptick. Additionally the 1993 computation method for determining state funds for district budgets are grossly outdated and do not serve our financial obligations. I will contact and work with legislators on both sides of the aisle to get this fixed so our available resources better align with modern day financial requirements.
I am already active in a number of local faith groups, educationally based groups and clubs with emphasis on civic and community sports involvment. I will make myself available for any and all questions, concerns, and respond timely to any member of the county or interested party.
Good teaching is not just test scores, but the demonstration of improvement across the year. For example, if a student arrives reading well below grade level and finishes the year near grade level, that is a WIN for the instructor, the school and the individual student. I will support advanced teaching approaches by supporting the administrators facilitating the in class instructors and support staff.
Yes. As mentioned above, there are many students who do not desire further academia, but have interests in trades and skilled labor. We should bring back/enhance programs that link older students up with community partnerships and apprenticeship programs to help them get started in a post-High School career of their choosing whenever possible. Education is not just about numbers on a statistical graph....its about building up the next generation of young adults to assume quality roles in our community and abroad.
See above concerning the 1993 state funding computation and my plans to push to update it.
Working with school leaders, resource officers, psychologists and social workers as well as local families to identify potential risks and mitigate them.
By giving the healthcare workers in our district the resources that they too need to supply our student needs. It is my understanding that we currently do not have enough professionals to meet our needs and must attract talent to serve our community. See above for Recruitment/Retention goals.
The most obese knight of King Arthur's court was Sir Cumference.
He acquired his size from too much Pi.
I do not come with a set agenda to drastically upend the school district. I advocate for sound fiscal policy, giving adequate resources and materials to instructors and administrators, and focus on positive learning environments which will foster individual growth and creativity that helps build future leaders and proactive community citizens.
Smaller, uncrowded classrooms with positive teachers who are passionate about their careers and focus on a learning environment that fosters educational attainment as the FIRST priority. Distractions should be minimized and energies spent on educational pursuits in the classroom and reinforced through real world examples and experiences when available.
I think it did moderately well with the data and advice that was being pushed by state government officials and the CDC at the time. We didn't have 20/20 hindsight, so we proceeding cautiously. Unfortunately, the home-based instruction with tablets, etc did not serve our children well and this was evident in follow on standardized tests and assessments. Likely this will take many years to recover from. If class sizes were smaller, during a pandemic, spread of virus could be more easily neutralized and controlled. All available methods and plans should be attempted before resorting to at home instruction.
I've already laid the groundwork in this regard as I have 3 children already in the school district and have served as a coach in the soccer league and parental support helper at our local children's instructional church classes. I will continue to build outreach with parents and concerned members of the community through civic involvement.
Explore options with seasoned board members and listen to the administrators concerns in this regard. I will further research Best Practices for Recruiting/Retention from other rural areas across the country who face similar obstacles to our own.
They should go hand in hand. Closed door meetings should only be necessary in instances when employee/student discipline is considered and privacy is important.
