Candidate Connection

Ryan Taylor participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 8, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Ryan Taylor's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Education

2) Economic Development
3) Woman's Health Care[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Education, including supporting and valuing our educators, will be my top priority because high-quality education prepares the next generation to be engaged citizens and skilled workers who will improve the standing of Ohio nationally and globally. Schools are so much more to our society than buildings that educate; teachers and administrators are passionate about working with students to develop critical thinking skills and students who engage in dialog and collaboration while meeting the needs of students to be successful. When we have students, who are career ready or college bound, our workforce and quality of life improves in Ohio.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Ryan Taylor answered the following:

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

My younger sister was born with a disability and medically fragile. While she is the one who had the diagnosis, our entire family was affected. I learned how to advocate at a young age for her care and on her behalf. I learned medical terminology and operating in the health care system as a teenager. As an adult, I see how much this has taught me to be empathetic to others, have an understanding how one person can impact so many, how to stand up for others. This moved me to have a positive impact on other’s lives in my professional career. First working on behalf of people who have developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities where I worked directly with clients, then as a counselor helping people return to work, and as an instructor, because of the multiplier effect, positively impacting a thousand of people’s lives through education.[3]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
As a community advocate and rehabilitation counselor, I find myself building relationships with leaders for the good of the community, students, and my clients. The biggest issues facing our community are education, the opioid epidemic, and economic development. No single person has all the right answers and we need to work together to solve these big challenges. We have more in common than we have differences. If we can focus on our common ground to build healthier communities where all citizens can succeed, then we can work out our differences, and build on our common goals.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Districts should be compact keeping communities intact as much as possible and should not break up voting blocks to the intentional benefit of one party. Any plan should take into consideration the agreement of the minority party in addition to the majority party to construct district lines. Every vote in Ohio matters and all voters should feel they have fair representation in their elected officials. If our districts don’t reflect our communities we are not true to the values of our representative democracy.[3]
