Candidate Connection

Ryan Terrell completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Terrell's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Recovery and rehabilitation for Hurricane Michael and other natural disaster survivors, Environmentally sustainable rural economic development to reduce poverty, and Infrastructure/Education/Affordable Housing funding issues

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Anti-poverty and economic development work, Sustainable Agriculture and Land Conservation, Smart Justice reforms, Civil and Voting Rights policy

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. I was in elementary school and my father was working as a boilermaker and welder for the city at the time. Being from Staten Island, where many of the firefighters and first responders were from, I will never forget how frightened and shaken everyone was and seeing the second tower fall in my class as it was happening. Some of my friends lost their parents or relatives and it definitely helped shape my passion for providing services to others and seeking unity and leadership during dark times in the community.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

I’m Still Here by Stephen Sondheim in the Broadway Musical “Follies”

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

As the ocean water levels continue to rise and become warmer due to climate change, Florida will have to grapple with stronger and more frequent hurricanes and other natural disasters that will reek havoc on our physical infrastructure, affordable housing stock, insurance policy increases, and drain on the state’s revenue.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Collaborative but respectfully independent of one another

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

I believe that for any democratic republic system of governing to function, you have to be able to clearly articulate your views and expectations of those seeking to represent you. That kind of open communication can never succeed if you dont recognize that others have different life experiences that shape their views and actively seek to build relationships with those who’s experience is different from your own.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Ideally, an independent non-partisan redistricting board that respects VRA minority participation, keeping communities of interest and counties intact where possible, with a strictly enforced ban of consideration of which political party or incumbent is advantaged by changes.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee, Agriculture and Natural Resources Subcommittee, Transportation and Tourism Appropriations Subcommittee, Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, Public Integrity and Ethics Committee

If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?

I’d be happy to serve in any role Leader McGhee and the rest of the leadership team thinks I can be of service and benefit to the people of my district and our state.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Highly unlikely due to long term personal health outlook. I’m running in this election because I am committed to ignoring the typical hyper partisan noise and ideological distractions and am trying to use my expertise in the legislative process and national connections to get this recovering region through a messy process and fight for funding. This area deserves a Representative who is completely focused on being the steady leader guides us through this recovery, not one half focused on their own re-election.
