SCOTUS stays WV redistricting ruling, allows existing map
January 30, 2012
Washington D.C.: On Friday January 20, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a stay on the ruling which blocked the implementation of the West Virginia redistricting map. The map was originally blocked on January 3 by a three-judge panel from the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia which held that the map was unconstitutional and gave the legislature until January 17 to change it. The district court felt the state failed to explain why one district contained several thousand more voters than the other districts. The ruling was stayed by the Supreme Court in order to allow time for an appeal and to permit West Virginia to conduct elections on time this year. Members of the West Virginia legislature plan to submit their appeal within a month.[1]
