Pierre, South Dakota: A decision by the South Dakota Supreme Court has denied access to unemployment benefits for a self-employed business when he opted to close the business due to financial difficulties. Michael Manuel of Sioux Falls closed his toner and printer business due to economic difficulties, expecting to be able to obtain unemployment benefits, which his business insurance covered. However, the Labor Department denied his claim, alleging that he was not eligible for benefits because he voluntarily terminated his employment. The state supreme court agreed, stating that he did not meet any of the specific circumstances for obtaining jobless benefits after self-termination.[1]
