The SEIU California State Council is a 501(c)(5) organization that coordinates the political efforts of affiliated local unions in California. As of August 2025, SEIU California included 17 local unions and around 750,000 members.[1]

SEIU

The SEIU California State Council is an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which reported having over 2 million members nationally as of August 2025.[2] The SEIU was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1921.

The state council includes local unions representing state and local public employees, hospital and nursing home workers, California State University faculty and other workers.[1]

Leadership

As of August 2025, David Huerta is president of SEIU California.[3]

SEIU California endorses candidates in state races. As of August 2025, had endorsed three candidates in 2025 for state assembly and the California Public Employees' Retirement System board.[14]

The SEIU California State Council endorsed Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) for California Governor on February 12, 2018. Roxanne Sanchez, president of the SEIU California State Council, said, "We believe that California can show the nation the way forward to a society that values every person and makes real progress toward economic and racial justice. Gavin Newsom will be both a visionary leader and, more important, a partner of working people in accomplishing these goals."[15] Newsom won the election on November 6, 2018.

The SEIU California State Council endorsed state Sen. Kevin de León (D), who faced five-term incumbent Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D), for U.S. Senate on February 12, 2018. David Huerta, then a board member of the SEIU California, stated, "Kevin shouldered our fight for the $15 minimum wage across the finish line, holds a strong record on environmental justice and fought valiantly to protect our immigrant communities when the Trump administration moved to openly attack them and divide families. He’s stood up for us and our California values again and again."[16] Sen. Feinstein won the election on November 6, 2018.
