Johnson was elected to the 22nd District Court on November 6, 2012. She advanced from the primary election, winning 19.4% of the vote and defeated Sylvia A. James in the general election on November 6, winning 66.32% of the vote.[2][3][4]

Judges of the Michigan District Courts are each elected to six-year terms.[5] The elections for this court are nonpartisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a qualified elector of the district, licensed to practice law in the state, under the age of 70, and have five years of experience practicing law.

Appointment

Though Johnson entered the race as a challenger, her September appointment by Gov. Snyder meant that she appeared on the ballot as an incumbent in the general election.[6]

Bar association ratings

Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association

The DMBA rated candidates running for judicial office in 2012. Candidates were given one of five ratings: Outstanding, Well Qualified, Qualified, Not Qualified or No Rating.

Johnson was rated as Outstanding.[7]

Wolverine Bar Association

Johnson received a rating of Extremely Well Qualified from the Wolverine Bar Association.[8]
