Three seats on the Sachem Central School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014.

Incumbent Teri Ahearn defeated Sara Wottawa to keep her seat, while fellow incumbent Dorothy Roberts defeated Kelli Burnham for the seat of board member Christine Lampitelli, who did not file for re-election. Newcomer Victor J. Canales ran unopposed and won Dorothy Roberts' former seat, which Roberts vacated to run for Lampitelli's seat.[1]

Sachem Central School District is located in Suffolk County, New York. The county seat of Suffolk County is Riverhead, New York. Suffolk County had a population of 749,606 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] Sachem Central was the seventh-largest school district in New York, serving 14,465 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[3]

Demographics

In 2012, Suffolk County had a slightly lower percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 32.6 percent of residents aged 25 and older in the county had earned a bachelor's degree, compared to 32.8 percent for New York. The median household income in Suffolk County was $87,778, above the state median of $57,683. The poverty rate in the county was 6.1 percent, compared to 14.9 percent statewide.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Sachem Central School District Board of Education consisted of nine members. All members were elected to three-year terms. Board members were elected at-large by the district as a whole, but each seat on the board was considered distinct and elected separately.[5] There was no primary election, and the general election was on May 20, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 21, 2014. Candidates had to file nominating petitions with at least 252 legitimate signatures to get on the ballot.[6]

Additional elections on the ballot

This election shared the ballot with a budget proposal made by the Sachem Central School District. The 2014-2015 budget proposal totaled up to $294,199,322, which was a 2.53 percent increase from the 2013-2014 budget. Voters approved the budget.[10]
