One seat on the Saint Paul Public Schools school board in Minnesota was up for general special election on November 3, 2020. The filing deadline for this election was August 11, 2020.[1]
The special election was called after incumbent Marny Xiong died on June 7, 2020. The winner of the special election served the remainder of Xiong's term, which ended on January 3, 2022.

In the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton (D) won Minnesota with 46.4 percent of the vote. Donald Trump (R) received 44.9 percent. In presidential elections between 1860 and 2016, Minnesota voted Republican 50 percent of the time and Democratic 47.5 percent of the time. In the five presidential elections between 2000 and 2016, Minnesota voted Democratic all five times.[3]
