An effort in Santa Ana, California, to recall City Councilman Sal Tinajero from his position was launched in April 2017. A notice of intent to recall was submitted to Tinajero on April 27, 2017.[1]

Recall supporters
A group of 24 residents in Tinajero's council ward sought his removal for concerns about the city council's handling of the police department. Tim Rush, one of the campaign's organizers, told local media:
“ |
With crime on the rise and now at near historic levels, the poor decision-making with regard to city leadership, including the city manager, police chief, etc., coupled with the anti-establishment and anti-good city government tone of these actions, we no longer feel that elected’s like Mr. Tinajero should be in positions of authority.[1][2] |

The group also argues that Tinajero's vote to cancel an agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement contributes to a budget shortfall.[1]
Recall opponents
Tinajero responded to the notice by saying that his support for making the city a sanctuary jurisdiction and his approach to public safety were beneficial to city residents.[1]
